Are you sure? I'm pretty confident that most firms offering accounting cadetships are expecting the people to study accounting. It doesn't matter if you study something else like Law with it (and some firms, even PwC) will permit Comm/Law on a cadetship; but ultimately, you still need to study Accounting.

IMO if you're doing tax... I'm inclined to think studying accounting would be very useful/beneficial to you too.



What are you talking about "UTS cadetship"? Cadetships are run by the individual firms, not the unis.

Tax is a bit different in that you don't necessarily have to do your CA because it isn't a requirement to practice. In fact in some firms it is preferable that you go and do your Masters as opposed to CA. As such, doing an accounting based degree isn't actually necessary and by I can assure you that when hiring into tax those with odd degrees are often accepted. And lets face it, your commerce degree / accounting major is actually of very little help practically when you are at work.

So if someone is working on a tax cadetship, they don't even have to study Accounting at all? How will they understand the basics of things like GST payable/input tax credits, transfer pricing, gst agents, tax structures, etc...? I mean some stuff will obviously be taught on the job, but there's the theory side which I can't see how else you could learn.

Btw, is Tax considered a major in itself? If so, then I understand where you're coming from... but I was always under the impression Tax is part of Accounting.

You do not have to do an accounting major if your working in tax. There a few people working with me who are not doing an accounting major.

Tax I have since learnt is a very specialised area, by no means do I think it is fair to say that 'tax' is part of accounting. Tax law changes every day, etc, etc. If you did an accounting major and went to work in tax at a firm, you are by no means prepared to dive straight in...you would have to do all the training and learn it all on the job. There is like one tax subject in an accounting degree? You wont learn effective tax structuring in an accounting degree.

Tax is not a major, however it is a sub-major at some universities. It SHOULD be a major, but according to a lectuerer I spoke to, it is considered too specialised and they simply would not get the numbers to run it.

I do work in tax btw, just in case people think im assuming/fabricating.

Hey does anyone know what the cadet intake is for the Big4? I am aware that Deloitte doesn't take many, but does anyone know about the others? I hear its around 30 each - can someone confirm?

Last year the intake for cadetships were roughly:

EY: 30-40
KPMG: 50
PWC: 60
PKF: 27
Deloittes: Didnt partake in the cadetship program

Your numbers sound about right kazzak for offers made- but Deloitte should have some cadets listed since they took in the Horwath people.

By any chance are you from PKF?

PKF surely had a large intake of cadets considering its a mid-tier firm, and BDO only took in 4-5 cadets from what i heard

By the sounds of the replies in this thread, it seems quite important to go to the Cadetship Evening? I wasn't planning on going since I'm busy Thursday evenings (and usually these sessions seem quite a waste of time ) Could somebody enlighten me on what exactly happens there?

At the evening you get to listen to speeches from people who did cadetships and what they thought/learnt, then you get to meet people from the firms (both HR and cadets) and find out more about which firm you connect with and if the cadetship program/support offered is what you need, and then if you are considering coop, you can meet people from there too.

Finally you get showbags with the book listing all the firms offering cadetships as well as the freebies offered by firms Not to mention free food.

i have enroled at the info evening on the 24th...wen i enroled they said they would send me more details by email and i havent heard anything yet?? have any of you?

also i have been trying to apply at PWC and i cant get onto that bit of the website? has anyone been able to apply?

what other companies offer them besides kpmg, e&y and pwc??

oh yeah and any tips for writing a cover letter? and writing about yourself? i find it hard as it seems really arrogant saying how good u think you are

New cadets starting in 2008 would be getting low 30k at a Big 4 I would assume.

Nah they didn't send much more info... but I won movie tix for registering? =) You were supposed to print off an information sheet once you confirmed your registration. I don't think they'll send u much more info.

at the mid-tier firms a rough figure is around $25k.

This girl told me that she got paid around $28k including fringe benefits (at a mid tier firm) and that she chose to work with that company because that was the highest salary that was offered.
