For my AOS i used this shitty poem and it turned out alright because my tutor picked it for me LOL but i dont really understand the meaning behind it and was thinking of changing my related to an anime. It would be so fascinating analysing an anime cause anime is love xD but when the hsc markers read my related they would be like WTF is this shit

i'm really keen using an anime for my related but same time scared asfk if i get like some shitty score

Would you be analysing a particular episode or bits and pieces from the whole series?

Honestly, you probably can but I wouldn't. Typically, I think most teachers would be fine with it as long as you do it well - but there's always the possibility of getting that one teacher who would write 'weak related text' on your essay and dock a mark or two. Realistically, English teachers are looking for an academic analysis of academic level texts (which by all means anime can be), but are typically looking for something Western with a level of subtlety and subtext. Note that this is simply my opinion and is fully open to disagreement.

That all being said, if you think you can write killer essays with anime versus so-so essays with the poem, then go for the anime and power to you.

I agree, my teacher suggested against using anime when someone asked in class. Remember that English teachers are usually 50+ people that don't appreciate things that aren't classics so all the best

Do something meaningful and meaty that you can legit analyse, something like Naoki Urasawa's work (Monster, 20th Century Boys, Billy Bat), Berserk, Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood in terms of anime), Homonculus. Pretty much Seinen exclusively is where you want to focus.

There is a reason they don't prescribe texts like High School Musical or Avatar lol

i was thinking of taking bits and pieces from the whole series :3 only for short anime series though

I can definitely agree with Studio Ghibli stuff, that's easily well known enough and has enough depth for a solid essay - I doubt there would be very many markers who would look on them as unfavourable

I don't hate anime. I've actually seen quite a bit, and I do appreciate it, to an extent. However, it's very very easy to fall into using extremely angsty "depressing" scenes in essays, and that is cringe.

If you can pull it off really well, then I don't see anything wrong with it, but I still think using some contemporary or classic literature would be not only much safer, but also much easier.
