So i'm doing Tim Winton's cloudstreet for mod b and to discuss how he adequately reaches to the repsonders i wanted to say that he uses slang and colloquialisms such "mate" etc... which adheres to Aussies. (something like that)

Is it ok to be using a word like that for 1-2 times in an essay, or is that word a bit too informal for an essay?
If not, are there any other ways of writing in a similar way?

Thanks

It's fine if you're using the word "Aussie" as a quote to analyse in your essay, but if you're trying to refer to Australians in general then I would stick with just using "Australian" rather than "Aussie" to keep it formal. It's the same idea as having to write out numbers in words rather than just writing the number itself (e.g. "three times", not "3 times"). That's just what's expected in an English essay, and colloquialism can risk losing you marks.
