Can normal BSc students pick all advanced units of study? In other words, are there any cirucmstances where normal BSc students are 'not allowed' to study advanced units?

If they ARE able to study advanced units, then what would be the difference between an BSc degree and an Adv. BSc degree?

No, it doesn't matter if they're in the BSc or BSc (Adv). As long as you fulfill the prerequisites you'll be fine.

In reality, there's no difference between the two. Those in the BSc (Adv) or BSc (Adv Maths) need to complete a certain number of Advanced units each year, to sufficient standard, to remain in their course, otherwise they get bumped down to BSc.

If you complete a BSc with enough qualifications for a BSc (Adv) or BSc (Adv Maths), you'll get awarded that degree. The degrees exist as marketing measures to attract the top students.

About your last comment, im not quite sure what you mean by the marketing measure. Is it that unis name the degree differently and advertise a higher ATAR, so smart students will be more inclined to choose the degree?

The UNSW BSc (Adv) includes an honours year. USyd doesn't provide such liberties, but still has to offer a BSc (Adv) of its own as an offering towards the higher students.

The included honours year really isn't as incredible a bonus as it might sound. You can very easily apply to do honours after B Sc (Adv) at USyd with a credit average, which you need to maintain as part of the degree requirement for B Sc (Adv) anyway.
