I've seen many explanation but I haven't been able to understand how marks are calculated.

Like how do ranks affect your HSC? How do get assigned other people's marks? If you sit just between the average and the top mark can you really get someone's marks who did bad? Also whose mark do you get when these marks are "reassigned"? Externals or Internal Mark?

I’m pretty sure that the ATAR is a rank based on your performance in ur internal and external exams compared to everyone in the state. I think ur internal mark is based on ur rank so say you got ranked 3rd in one of ur subjects and 83 was the 3rd highest average mark overall in all the internal exams then u would get that. Or something like that

But how does the mark reassignment work negatively against you? People keep talking and complaining about that but I don't understand it.

let’s pretend your internal rank is 2nd. You sit the HSC and get a mark of 57. If 57 was actually the 2nd highest mark then that’d be both your internal and external marks. But if someone else got the 2nd highest mark, which we’ll say was 96, because your rank was 2nd you’ll end up with an internal mark of 96 even though your external mark is 57. And because your final mark is the average of your internal and external marks that 2nd place rank is going to come in handy and give your average a nice boost. So if you rank second, you pretty much take the 2nd. But it can also work against u If many other students perform well externally, your lower external mark could limit the benefit of your high internal rank, leading to a final score that doesn't reflect your potential.

So is it possible to get the mark of someone above you if you do better than them in the HSC?

I don’t think so because if u got a higher mark than them overall in the externals and internals u would be ranked higher in the end and u would get a higher overall mark than them
