Can you have a part time job + complete the HSC course effectively? (1 Viewer)

Did you have a job when you were in your last years of high school? Did it take a lot of time, could you handle the workload of school with your job? Would you recommend it? I'm considering getting a part time job but I might not be able to have time for it, not sure. How did it work out for you guys?

I had a casual job working at a vet, i found that it was ok and I could manage my studies fine.
I thought it was a good break from studying as I was doing something that I enjoyed but I know a few people who couldn't handle their jobs and quit during the year.

I'd recommend you to start looking for a job now. The younger you are, the cheaper you are. Do know that whilst doing the HSC while working is difficult, uni is going to be tougher, so it's good practice. You might not get many shifts anyway. The Year 12s where I work only get one or two 3 hour shifts a week.

This is good advice.

I would like to add that having the experience of working during high school can help you land better jobs when you start uni.

Pretty much as above. I worked Maccas shifts 2-3 times a week year 11 (cause year 11 easy), then moved to 2 shifts in the first 2 terms and then 1 shift for last 2 terms for year 12 (then month before hsc I took a break). I still had pleeenty of time to study,yet I chose to play games, and still did fine, so honestly it's not a big deal. Plus it really helps you get a better job during university where you want to make some money for yourself (instead of scabbing off parents or government). The experience also helped me land a cadetship(basically a better job) for uni which is all I could hope for.

Hmm I was also thinking about taking on a part-time job during Year 12. I've read advice from different forums and people say that you procrastinate less when you have a job. Is this true? I don't want to get a job and then find that I have too little time for studying. :L

No I didn't have a job but some people like it better because it helps keep them busy and therefore they are a lot more productive when they have spare time in comparison to others who just laze around all the time because they have too much time to waste. It depends on what type of person you are. If you don't know if you're one of those people, you can always test it out.

I agree with how it's good experience for future jobs + your resume. Kind of getting it so I can be a little more sociable because I'm the opposite of that, hoping it will kind of force me to get out of my shell a bit.

Hm, regarding the points about procrastinating less and being more productive with work- I didn't really think of that but when I think about it now, I would think that'll work (at least for me). I'd have less free time and so I'd have to prioritise to get things done + make me stop worrying about things that I need not worry about but worry about anyway because I simply have the time to.

Thanks for your input guys, all of this points me to the direction that I'm more than likely going to try for that part time job now. Now I just have to talk to my parents .. And hope I get the job.

By the way, know that heaps of people go for jobs in the paper or on the internet, so apply at a lot of places that you can see yourself working at. Don't just concentrate on one job and cross your fingers on it--you might not get it. Personally, I got my current job after getting rejected at 20 places without even getting one interview, and I only got my current job because my sister works there!
