Career aspirations - Is it realistic? Adivce please! (1 Viewer)

Hi BOS Community,

My dream career would be Journalism, which I desperately want to study at UTS and UTS only! Their UAI cut-off is quite high, at about 95+ thus I need advice about my subject selection and scaling etc.

If I were to get say, a band 5 in my current subjects which are;
Advanced English, Math General, Business Studies, Studies of Religion 1 Unit, Visual Arts, IPT, Modern History; would my UAI suffice? I know, some subjects scale high whilst others dont. I didn't pick my subjects based on scaling, rather on my personal interests.

Oh and one more inquiry, I was talking to a teacher the other day, and he advised me to purchase a book which contains HSC sample student papers in which they are classed through bands so I would know I need to do this, this and this to reach a band 6. Does anyone know the name of this book?

ah i share the same aspirations as you. i desperately want journalism (and law) at uts. we have some of the same subjects.

anything is possible, you just need to work your ass off. go randomly enter some scores into SAM to see what kind of marks you'd need to get throughout the year to get the uai.

high band 5/ low band 6 should get you there. if nothing else it will get you a low 90's uai and bonus points might allow you to creep over the line into your degree. its not hard, just do well and study.

Wow looks like I need subject changes, but it's a little too late for that... I entered an 80 mark for each subject and it seems like I'll be floating around the 70 UAI mark... If I were to get 90+ for each subject, I jump up to the 92+ UAI mark, such a big difference.

If I were to drop a lower scaling subject, which would be the most suitable to drop? As far as I know the higher scaling subjects are; Advanced English, Studies Of Relegion 1 Unit and Modern History.

high band 5/ low band 6 should get you there. if nothing else it will get you a low 90's uai and bonus points might allow you to creep over the line into your degree. its not hard, just do well and study.

Don't rely on band 5's.

i thought you needed to do extension english to get into journalism? as in its a pre requiste?
suppose you could do a bridging course though...

If you don't expect or can't get a band 6 in Gen Math then maybe you should be looking at doing a trade.

EE1 doesn't teach you shit though. And there's no such thing as pre-requisites at unis anymore, except for certain specialist degrees, of which journalism is not one. There's only assumed knowledge, and considering EE1 doesn't teach you anything, it should be simple enough.
Just work on writing style and vocabulary. That'll cover it.

You'll need to work extremly hard... most likely a band 6 in each to get you a 90+ UAI

Visual Arts is pretty low scaling (I think) so you could drop that if you wanted...

Journalism isn't just about the UAI you get...

my parents are both journalists and they often say that journalism is a hard industry to get into because there's always a limited number of jobs and such. So obviously you need the UAI to get into the course, but for afterwards when you want to start working, you'll look a lot better if you've got as much experience as possible.

So if you've got a school newspaper, or something like that, or if you can find opportunities to get experience, you'll have an advantage later on.
