is it necessary to learn the condensed formula for b-glucose forming cellulose, or is the structural formula sufficient?

If by condensed formula you mean the "hexagonal" glucose monomers.. then yes.

It's really good to know as, if there does happen to be a question about the structure of cellulose - a mark will probably be allocated to drawing the formation of two or more inverted beta glucose monomers to form cellulose and a water molecule.

The structural formula is adequate provided you know how to link the monomers together to make cellulose.
