but we can't know if the suspect had mental health conditions that would have prevented him from being given access to a gun in aus?
what if he's got some kind of mental disorder where under australian law he wouldn't be allowed to purchase a gun but he can in the us?
Maybe if he had access to proper mental health care or didnt feel disenfranchised he wouldnt have picked up the gun to begin at all. I mean, neither of those things are guarantees, but they would reduce the risk.

violence has fallen over the past 50 years, has mental health improved over that time? Has inequality decreased?

And are literally a majority of left wing americans "mentally ill"? Because a majority support assassination

Are the countless leftists all over the internet, including apparently thousands of teachers and government workers, are they all "mentally ill"?

If "mental illness" is so common on the left, maybe instead of focusing on "mental illness" you just come down hard on left wing extremist ideology?

I should point out, it is a big misconception that the vast majority of government workers are left wing. Political ideologues of both persuasions have this idea of public servants as being people in brown cardigans in an office. In truth, most public servants are engaged in frontline or service delivery roles (in NSW, only 10% of public servants are clerical/administrative/office workers). Those workers have a range of views from left wing to right wing and everything in between. For example, I bet if you were to go to a prison and speak to the guards, most probably arent "snowflake lefties".

Also, in general those that live in the far-right/far-left bubble see all people as fitting into either the left or right of the political spectrum. In Australia, most people dont fall into any one category and support a range of left and right wing ideals. Honestly, most people dont even know the difference. Taking me for example, Im more of a pragmatist - I like things that work and I support a range of ideas from both the left and right. Ive voted for both sides of the aisle over the years.

Also building on this, people support parties out of self-interest as opposed to right/left. Like say the CFMEU, they support Labor but that's mainly because Labor supports the union movement. I dont think many CFMEU members are woke supporters of radical queer gender theory - you find their members would align with the social values of the right/One Nation. For many, self-interest trumps ideology.

Btw, the gun used for this assassination was a bolt action hunting rifle

These guns are everywhere, including europe and australia
From what I read the rifle he used was a 30.06 which is a big gun - mostly used to take down large animals. They are used here but they arent very common owing to the fact that other calibres are better for taking down the kind of animals we have (roos, deer, feral pigs etc). A .22 250 is a more common round in Australia which is much smaller - Ive seen the damage it can do to a kangaroo at around the same distance as Kirk's assassination and it wasnt pretty. That 30.06 would have torn him apart.

Definitely backs my view that the shooter is at least an experienced hunter because the 30.06 isnt easy to handle and tends to drop over distance, so you would need to be a crack shot.

@SylviaB Do you think Charlie Kirk is the George Floyd of right wing politics?
wasnt the whole thing with floyd that he was targeted for being black. being killed for the colour of ur skin feels different to being killed for preaching christian nationalism or wtv tf that man was spitting. neither murder is justified but those feel like completely different realities.

Sure, except that doesn't work because anger and violence in response to floyd's death had absolute institutional support. If right wingers rioted over this in blue cities, they wouldn't have received corporate sponsorship, they wouldn't have been allowed to take over police stations and entire city blocks with no repurcussions etc.

There is zero evidence of that whatsoever

A ukrainian woman was killed in north carolina by a black man a few weeks ago because of the color of her skin. Nobody on the left cares.
