For an entire system? Or just the box itself?

No monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, etc.

For $2500, you can build yourself a very nice system. :)

I can smell an AMD/Intel war coming along, so we'll better keep Winston happy :)

I have always used Intel processors, currently on a P4C with HT.
I have never owned an AMD, but I have used a Thunderbird 1.4GHz.

So in my biased view, and from my perspective, I have always purchased Intel-based CPUs.

This is only based on my experience and my usage/needs.
:)

Not for $2500 you won't.

The PowerMac G5's start from $3500, without an Apple Display.
This is the educational discount pricing as well.

(You could always use a cheap monitor for the time being).

If Newbie wants an Apple Mac, I would recommend the 15" LCD iMac with Combo Drive, for about $2200. It is $2500 RRP or thereabouts.

thanks Huy

All i can clearly say for you Newbie is

Intel -->> Costs more than AMD's

If your in for it for a cheap price, then AMD for CPU is your choice, otherwise for "soi-disant" quality i'd say Intel

The Choice is yours

HAHA, do you wanna end up with a dodgy PC?

well one of my friends just got themselves a nice config

Nice motherboard

AMD 2800 XP +

120 GB Seagate SATA

1 gb DDR Corsair ram

umm forgot the rest lol....

but yeah at that price, it's a top notch system, i'd advise u to abstain yourself until the HSC is over, then u can worry about it after, and the prices would have dropped even more

With 2500 I don't see any problem with getting a P4(C) system.
This is a system i shall be putting togther for my sister (view attached Excel file).

A Radeon will serve you well. Right now the FX series really just cannot compete with the 9700's. We'll see with further driver revisions though.

So in other words, right now, ATi have the Graphics Accelerator Crown over nVidia.

Seriously, if you not desperate for PC now, wait until prescott or AMD-FX/64 hits australia...

then prices will drop up to 20%

also wait until next generation of vid cards. this generation are all too crap. besides next year there will be 6 manufacturers all competing for similar market!!! watch the prices drop!!

best times to buy

CPU and etc.: december 2003 - jan 2004

Vid card: end of Q1 2004

these times aren't too far away....

EDIT: I'm gonna wait
