I am currently going to do Nanotechnology at UNSW (HOORAY~!) and am having trouble of selection what course... So far, I am going to do PHYS1131 as I love physics and also have done it at school. For maths, im doing 1131 as the higher maths requires knowledge of 4-unit maths which i havent done. anyways, the real problem is deciding on chemistry. I havent done chemistry at school but currently do a bridging course for it. Which chemistry is more appropriate for nanotechnology? is there any benefit for doing a harder course? 1011 or 1031~ please help me decide~!

(sorry for double posting but i really need many suggestions :) )

maths 1131 is the easier one. the harder one that requires 4 unit knowledge is 1141, which i wont be doing. anyways... so chem 1131 has no benefit towards the future at all?

Psch, any major I've seen at UNSW doesn't give any extra credit for taking the advanced subject, none at all. They accept both, employers will rarely give a hoot about which chem you attempted, it's a foundation subject, do the easy one. At the very least, you'll get a hire GPA due to the easy nature of the course.

math1131 and math1231 both have 4 unit topics in them. the only difference between the two courses is that math1231 has slightly more (and harder) topics/questions than math1131, but they both learn the same thing for most of the course. math1231 will be taught a lot faster than 1131 due to the extra content.

if you haven't done chem before, just do 1011.

isnt maths 1131 a prerequisite for 1231 anyways?

I advocate you to do chem 1011, first because you dont have a strong chem background and second it will take a load off as you are doing a higher physics course. I went through chem1031 and saw alot of people failing and dropping, chem1011 aint easy either.

I'm not here to answer your question, but I'm doing nanotech at UNSW too.
