"cis" in 4unit maths (1 Viewer)

I was just wondering whether hsc markers accept using "cis" in exam instead of the " cosx + isinx "
my teacher told me they DO NOT LIKE IT but everyone else is telling me otherwise

My teacher said its fine, he actually told us to use it to save time (he's a senior marker for 3u)

if they don't like it that's their problem. I wrote cis in all of my exams because cbf writing the whole thing lol

It's a time saver, and that's something you need as 4 unit papers do push you for time

well how about use cis notation in your working and in the final answer write the cosx + .. thing out

depends on the question, some that require use of real and unreal parts such as finding cos 5x using Demoivre's theorem
would need it to be expressed as cos x + i sin x at least once.

or if the question requires you to integrate or differentiate than that form is also needed.

I reckon do it at school to please your teachers and get the marks, but in the actual HSC write "cis" because ain't nobody got time to write the full thing out.

Well that is an internationally recognised notation, whereas cis is not. If anything should be penalised, it should be cis.

I had a Russian or Ukrainian algebra lecturer, and a German calculus lecturer (professor) who didn't recognised that notation. Of course that doesn't imply those countries don't use it, but it does beg the question of how widespread the use of cis is in academia. LaTeX does not have an inbuilt cis function (only recent packages allow for a specialised cis function), and the great majority of mathematics journal articles are written in LaTeX.

cis is very widely used by the maths community; if the HSC markers don't like it, to hell with them!
