Hey guys,
i'm getting confused with the terms 'span of control' and 'chain of command'....
is it the behavioural theory that has the wide span of control and long chain of command or is that for the classical scientific... eek... im confuzzled!

Span of control: number of workers under one manager
Chain of command: number of levels of management

Classical-Scientific theory - long chain of command, narrow span of control. The pyramid looks taller because there are more levels of management and more narrow because the worker to manager ratio is smaller. Thus, communication is more difficult.

Behaviourial Theory is the exact opposite - short chain of command, wide span of control.

Classical-Scientific Definition:

a theory which saw managementas a process of planning organising and controlling, which believes in a heirachial organisation structure and implements an autocratic leadership style
