From what it says in one of the Excel guides, every single individual work in this category must be equally technically accomplished, and that the overall mark can only be as good as your best work.

Is that true, or do all the works just need to work well together as a whole?

My collection of works will be joined together when put on the wall, so it'll look like one artwork anyway..

Aaargh I don't get it!

i saw that excel book as well, but i just thought that it was a 'guide' so i just skimmed over it - i didn't take it all literally. but now that you mention it, i remember seeing it.
mine is a collection of works as well, and i just thought that they had to work well and portray meaning all together - not separately.....i'm confused as well :/
i don't know what to think now?!

I think they are all marked individually, but also on a whole so to see how well they gel together

Mine is a collection, too. About 8-10 big watercolour paintings.
I thought they were all put up together, marked as a whole?
I have no idea, come to think of it. Guh.

I think in general, your work just need to be presented well as a whole.
However, the problem with a collection of artwork is that having one part (i.e. one painting out five) lacking in technique and skill by the judgement of the marker would definitely lower your mark. So you would choose very carefully which work to put in. I remember my art teacher used to tell us not to submitt quantity but quality.
