Why is that the backup plan? Shouldn't it be the primary plan?

Trust me, you do not want to work as a teller. My gf recently quit her job as a teller and some of the horror stories she told me would shock you.
The customers are rude (what do you expect when you entrust your money with the bank) and you will get yelled at on a daily basis.

Plus you have to say "In order to give you a 10/10 service, is there anything else I can help with" to every person (it was something along those lines)

I feel sorry for bank tellers who cop all the abuse from customers furious about interest rate hikes...

I've heard so many bad stores from bank tellers especially since my sister is one, one time she came home in tears because of the abusive day she had at work :(

The position you are looking for is Customer Service Representative. If you'd prefer to work on the enquiries desk (higher pay, more training) look for Customer Service Specialist.

Contrary to what lots of people have written, the pay is good for entry level customer service (~$22/hr) + you have the ability to earn a bonus of up to 10%.
You get excellent discounts on bank products and services, $100s worth of uniform and a Cert III in financial services after 6 months with the bank.

after my uni graduation i worked as a teller part time mainly because i was in that role in my last semester of uni anyway. i believe it builds solid soft skills when you actually converse with clients. and yeh, rarely are they advertised as "bank teller". the modern day teller is a customer service representative and also a bank teller. they are required to obtain and refer leads to a qualifier for conversion into a sale.

I'd think being a customer service representative, apart from paying quite well for an entry-level job, would also open doors for you later on especially if you do a business-related degree at uni.

With all the graduate job applications, they all ask "are you currently or have you previously been employed with this company before?"

I'd imagine starting as a teller would help quite a bit in that regard. Remember also that Gail Kelly (former CEO St. George, now CEO Westpac) started her financial services career as a bank teller!

I think I would be a bit paranoid if I worked as a teller. Having to count thousands of dollars worth of cash, quickly, and know that even one note out means a loss of $50/$100. I do a more tame version of this when I work retail checkouts but always count the $50 notes for "cash out" at least twice because I'm a pussy.
