These are just the key points in the similarities & differences between Kidneys & renal dialysis

Kidney
  • Removes waste from blood
  • Natural process
  • Continuous removal of wastes
  • Rapid process
  • Uses passive & active transport
  • Uses filteration & reabsorption
  • Main filter is glomerulus
  • Wastes & some metabolites are removed in filteration
  • Internal process
  • Urination occurs

Renal Dialysis
  • Removes waste from blood
  • Artificial process
  • Removes wastes only when patient is hooked up to the dialysis machine
  • Slow process - depends on passive transport only
  • Uses filteration only
  • Filter is dialysis tubing
  • Wastes & water removed in filteration, metabolites stay in blood
  • Usually external
  • Some to No urination occurs
  • restrictive fluid intake
