for the 3rd and 4th question use the formula as above

If you get a^4 + bx^2 + c and cant factorise it
Let x=a^2 as above and then use the quadratic formula to find x

x=a^2

z1/z2=(r1cisa/r2cisb)=cis(-b)/cis(-b) * (r1cisa/r2cisb) and then expanding and simplifying using the properties of cosine u get the required answr.

I sort of get it haque's way but why can't it be done by using Demoivre's Theorum, is it because it's a 'prove'?

ps sorry for invading ur question chousta :eek:

Thats Sir Jim Coroneos' handwriting

-----------------------------------

z+z^1 = (1-i)/(2+i) + (2+i)/(1-i)

cross multiply etc and simplify

= 3+2i/(3-i)

realising the denominator

=7+9i/10

therefore Re(z) = 7/10
Im(z)=9/10

If you want to get good marks and appreciate the beauty of maths then yes you should get it.

Otherwise i dont reccomend it

I know how to do it DT's way except I'm not sure of slidely's way and unsure of the 'cosine properties' in haques way.

Would you like me to post up my working for the way I did it?
