team eeko became the first one man party to win an comsoc or uni election in the history of UNSW

his line up is surely promising:

president: eeko
vice president: eeko
social exec: eeko
marketing: eeko
careers:eeko
education: eeko
Publication: eeko

congrats to eeko, a hard fought election indeed

Final result of the count of official votes:

631 Community
724 Drive

That worksd out to around 47% vs. 53%, so the end result was not as close as expected.

I have read most of the posts about Comsoc and I have to admit that the majority of the posts are very negative.

People are saying that Comsoc doesn't do anything, it should be more active, it should communicate more etc .. . . .Why don't you people do something about it?? Comsoc is what you make of it, and it seems to me that the people in here are too busy critizing a society which desperately needs their help.

I am an active member, and I know what the problem is: there is only 14 execs and a handful of active members catering for approx 4000 students. Students who spend their time in forums bagging out Comosoc and not spending their time trying to improve it.

On another topic: I agree that the election needs changing. I do not agree with the suggestion from Bambul ie the vote at an AGM. We all agree that it is currently a popularity contest, if we held a vote at an AGM then the most popular people would still win as they would get all their friends to vote. I think it should be based on performance, maybe through a series of events or interviews/resumes. The people who choose the execs should be an independent panel of some sort. . .???

What the hell would commerce students know about politics and accountability? ;)

I'd say the great majority were CV line hunting.

Exactly how can we go about helping Comsoc?

We vote for -insert party here- (be it DRIVE or COMMUNITY) in the vain hope that they will be able to change the way Comsoc operates, such that us, the students, get more out of it.

And with the AGM idea: I think it will eliminate most (but probably not all) of the popularity votes going on with the Comsoc election.

and frigid: good idea with archiving their policies- we can come back in a year and see exactly how much they've done. My guess?? - not much at all.

Unfortunately though, there's been a lack of communication as to ways you can get involved in comsoc and become an active member. Maybe it's just me but the only communication that i receive from comsoc are emails advertise o-camp, commerce ball, smh tertiary card and people album. I think communication from the FCE staff regarding executive dialogue, cpa competitions has been more frequent than communication from ppl involved in comsoc.

i think ur too cynical? a lot of people in the current team and the in coming team will work for their famili business or work for themselves. i dont know who they will show their CV to? their parents?

myself for an example will study a B Archcitecture degree after i finish my commerce degree. totally unrelated

dont think so ill of people. :)

the biggest way you can help comsoc is to particpate in our events and through these you will meet all the executives who i assure you would be very happy to get some volunteers.

in all honesty, there is not much more you can do. its pretty exhausting to cater for 000's of studetns when its just 14 of us in the team., hence our capacity is limited with the physical support we have, and let us not forget we are uni students and our primary objective is to learn at uni.

secondly, we all love more FREE bbqs, more events etc, but with the limited monetary sponsoship we have, its hard to realise policies, and once again, we are pretty tired from all the exisitng events let alone adding more events on the calender.

comsoc will always be something along the lines of hwat we see now until we

1. get more man power, ie: volunteers (sorta hard, cuz being commerce students, people wanna get paid for their effort and time)

2. run profitable events so comsoc wont be as broke as we are now. camp cruise and the ball are not profitable, each ticket is subsidised. if we dont have a lot of particpants, the dean gets angry with us for not running a good event, if we have too many participants, the dean congradulates us and then ask us we did we make such a big loss (each ticket is subsidised). sports day - we just broke even. i think drive (the newly elected team to take over for next year) will have casino nights, which should see some revenue

3. get more sponsorship deals.
