Alrighty, I know it says that a standard full time degree entails 40 units per semester.

But how do you break down teaching/arts (secondary social science)?
There are 40 units of compulsary education, as well as the history major and a minor course (alternatively I can have 2 minors..)

:) any information would be appreciated!

You should only have to do 20units of education in first semester (EDUC1003 and EDUC1005) from memory.. then you will do EDUC1004 and EDUC1006 in second semester. This leaves room for you to do another 20units in your social science degree....

Check again what semesters each of the courses are offered...

Your enrollment might look something like

Semester 1:
educ1003
educ1005
hist1010 or minorxxxx
hist1050 or minorxxxx

Semester 2:
educ1004
educ1006
hist1020 or minorxxxx
hist1060 or minorxxxx

That's the standard way to do it, (I used all the 'recommended' 1st year history major courses, they don't appear to be compulsory for that major though)
you could also overload and do 50 units in a semester depending on what history/minor courses you want to do (since the courses that are available seem to change every year, and also there's no real flexibility as to what sequence you take the EDUC courses in).

Apparently Students are required to complete courses in either a 90 unit major and 50 unit Social Science elective, or complete courses in a 70 unit major, 40 units of one Social Science elective and 30 units of another Social Science elective.

So you might also look at how many EDUC courses there are in each semester in 2nd to 4th year and plan how you'll fit whatever combination of history/minor courses you want. The availability by semester/year changes sometimes though.

Thanks Captain Gh3y and Princess SJ :)
Ahhh that clears up stuff SO much!

I think I have this

Semester 1:
educ1003 – professional preparation 1A

educ1005 – learners and the learning process 1

hist1050 – medieval and early modern history

soca1010 – society and culture: a sociological introduction

Semester 2:
educ1004 – professional preparation 1B

educ1006 – contexts of teaching

hist1020 – Australia in the 20th century

soca1020 – introduction to social and cultural anthropology

I know it looks weird but there weren't many history courses on offer this year :(

looks good to me...

I had to do HIST1010 as a foundations course for 'teaching and learning in HSIE K-6'.... It was crap as, but I somehow got a distinction :D

oh poor you, I despised that course so much. If you have Andrew Lattas as your lecturer be prepared to be bored out of your brains

Actually now that you mention hours, do you know which tutorials you're going to register for?

http://studinfo2.newcastle.edu.au/rego/stud_choose_login.cfm

It says the EDUC courses open on the 29th of January, I'm going to do it straight away since there's like 800 people in those courses.

Planning to have 8 hours on Tuesday and not much on the others.

Thanks for clearing this up, but how do I know whether I should choose 2 Hist courses or 2 minor courses or 1 of each? Is it just personal preference?
I'm really worried about choosing the right number of units because one of my friends found out 3/4 of the way through his first year that he hadn't selected enough courses and he had to do all the catch-up work in the last semester. :worried:

Also, can anyone else get onto the Newy Uni site today? It seems to be down....

Site's back up now

It's pretty much up to you as long as by the end you've done 'either a 90 unit major and 50 unit Social Science elective, or complete courses in a 70 unit major, 40 units of one Social Science elective and 30 units of another Social Science elective.'

To decide you'd look at things like what semester different courses you want to do will be available, how many educ courses you have to do in future semesters and also if any of the 1000 level courses are prerequisites for the 3000 level courses you want to do.
