im doing Ted Hughes Birthday Letters as a set text, and was just wondering, is there a chance that the HSC question could specifically ask for one or 2 of the set poems? or will it more than likely allow you to choose which ones you refer to.

It will probably name one poem and then let you choose the second. Although as you said it may ask specifically for two. But being the first year of the elective i'd back the former.

English paper 2 as well, i need to work on my slow writing. In the trials i got 19/20 for module A, 17/20 for module B and 4/20 for module C. Fuck conflicting perspectives

Hmmmm so what happens with related material if we have to prepare all texts? I've been preparing two Hughes poems and two related texts to compare but they have ideas in common. If I have to do some other poem, my related material won't work. Or am I doing this all wrong? :S :S

You're doing it right, but... you're screwed if they pick the poem you don't know.

No, no, no, not prepare related texts for each poem, but assemble 2 related texts that can be related to each poem.

In other words, be in shape to write about each poem (although specialising in about 3 is a common approach), and know how to relate your related texts to each poem.

Prob a little late to be suggesting texts but i think that these are great texts to study with Julius Caesar. 12 Angry Men and V for Vendetta really show conflicting perspective and representation

Conflicting perspectives is real annoying. It was in our trial but its obviously in the hsc - im starting my essay now-ish and panicking! Julius Caesar was a fuck. Hey rorycole92, I'm using V for Vendetta aswell! Yay twins!

For whoever asked if u need specific poems, you need to remeber that to the BOS they consider all the poems one text, like a novel. Just to concenrate on 2 chapters of a 6 chapter novel doesnt show your understanding of the text as a whole.

in my trial they gave a SPECIFIC poem (the minotaur) that you had to refer to!! it sucked lol!!!

in the end i just referred to it with 2 or 3 sentences (when writing about 'the shot') and the markers deemed that as enough of a reference =S lol

i was under the impression that the hsc could only ask u to reffer (not analyse) to one so all u need is a sentance saying "which is enhanced by (required poem) through the alliteration ..."

This is the way we've been taught, is that you go through it thematically, ie.

1. Explain a 'common theme' in Hughes/Plath and how they conflict through language features

2. Do the same with another theme/issue/occurrence

3. Then use two other texts and show how conflicting perspectives are also shown in the comparative study of those two.
