It it true that you can use the University's Internet connection from home? Some people were trying to tell me that you can access the Internet through a University phone line. Is this true:confused:?

yeah, youve gotta get some kit thingy from a cybercycle and you get 2hours at a time... apparently its really slow... but for the cost of a local phone call (i think) it may be worth it

Oh, so it is true? I don't think it would be any slower than my Dial-Up Modem though. Also, is it strictly for educational use only:)?

Yeah I installed it a few months ago... really sluggish (only got sumtin like 40,000 bps) + the 2 hour session limit + refused to load certain webpages, so I've given up on it. There's no stipulations/monitoring of what you use it for so if you can get it to work then good luck to ya! :)

That is better than the 28.8 Kbps connection I am usually stuck with:mad:. What kind of web pages doesn't it load:)?

I might do a bit of research then. I will also make another enquiry about the availability of Broadband in my area. It has been a couple of months since my last enquiry:).

It sounds like you have the same connection problem I do, it's called Telstra.

They refuse to upgrade our exchange, so no matter how new the actual lines are, we can't get speeds faster than 32k (but the last few weeks have turned up nothing over 28, more often 26). Good luck getting broadband though.

Thanks, you too (if you want it). It is so unbelievably frustrating:mad:! I thought you lived in Sydney? Isn't Sydney completely ADSL compatible:confused:?

In theory yes. However, all the slightly-less-rich-than-North-Sydney (known as "less critical") exchanges experience a severe case of mighty suckage.

In short, we have to wait for Telstra to decide that oh look, we can make more money by putting in more DSL capable lines in our God-forsaken ancient exchanges. If the Government sells Telstra at least they will be subject to NORMAL corporate standards - if that were the case now they'd be shredded in court thrice a week.

Oh, I see. Well lets hope Telstra gets privatised then:D!

16 Kbps:eek:! That is slow. I think the lowest I have ever connected at is somewhere around 24 Kbps and the fastest is about 32 Kbps. The average is around 26.4 Kbps to 28.8 Kbps. At the moment I am connected at 26.4 Kbps:(.

  That's terrible!! I thought my pathetic 48k once in a while was bad! But crikey 16k... i'd go INSANE!

I couldn't get it to load anything that's not uni related, for example it will load blackboard, studentmail and the uni website no probs, but when I try yahoo I get the 'page not available' thing... went and asked them in the aic and they told me to change certain settings and stuff but yeah still doesn't work so i've got no idea. I've used it a few times when i've had to submit something to bb and i couldn't connect to my isp... just annoying that its so slow!

Well, I'm feeling pretty chuffed with my constant 52k and 5.5-6k/sec downloads..
I'm on a RIM, out at Warners Bay, so can't get ADSL, much to my chagrin..
But I do think I've got one of the fastest dialup connections around.. *shrug*
SJ - I didn't think the lines up your way were THAT bad? I know a couple of people that live up the road from you, and they get 44-48k.. you REALLY need your lines fixed up..
By law, Telstra HAS to guarantee 19kbps as a minimum now, so it'd be worth giving them a call and demanding them to fix it, or at least maintain reasonable (*cough* for some reason 19kbps is reasonable..?) access speeds..

SJ:-
"The Internet Assistance Program was set up as a joint venture between Telstra Corporation and the Federal Government to ensure a minimum transmission speed of at least 19.2 kilobits per second to all users of its fixed network. Subsequently, it was decided that a minimum speed of 19.2 kilobits per second would become a condition of Telstra’s licence agreement. While this condition is not binding on other network carriers (where Telstra does not provide the underlying infrastructure), the TIO views this as an industry benchmark and expects that regardless of which network a customer is connected to, the standard telephone line provided should be capable of a minimum transmission speed of 19.2 kilobits per second.

Upon receipt of a complaint about the transmission speed which a complainant is able to obtain on their internet connection, the TIO will first refer the complainant to a high level complaints area at their ISP in order to determine what may be the cause of slow speeds experienced.

If this process indicates that the transmission speed may be limited due to the telephone line itself, and the customer’s telephone service is provided on the Telstra network the TIO will also refer complainants to the Internet Assistance Program (IAP). If the telephone service is provided on a network other than Telstra’s network, the TIO will refer the complainant to their own telephone service provider for appropriate testing to be undertaken.

Where a complainant is still unable to achieve transmission speeds of at least 19.2 kilobits per second after referral to both their ISP and the Internet Assistance Program or their telephone service provider as the case may be, the TIO will ask the complainant to provide evidence of the transmission speed that they are able to achieve, and may investigate the complaint with a view to ensuring that the line meets minimum speed requirements/benchmarks."

Pulled that from http://www.tio.com.au/POLICIES/Faults/Slow line speed.htm
I suggest you take some screenshots of your connnection screen over a period of a couple of weeks, showing that your connection speed is consistently low when it rains, then refer it to the TIO. Telstra MUST guarantee it, in ALL weather conditions, so yeah, get on their arse! Go above their heads to the TIO, hound them until they fix it.
If you need any more info on this, lemme know hey?
