You are an employer looking through a long list of graduate profiles, lets say that all these students have the same grades of about credit average. The only thing that changes is the university they attended, the things they have done outside of university including things like vacation work.

Would you give preferance to someone just becauce they went to a particular university, say just becauce they went to UNSW, UTS, USYD, MAQ, etc. Or would you look at other more personal qualities and skills they have shown in past work experience?

What are you thoughts?
you also have to remember the students from the top unis are the 'smartest' to begin with. as in, they are the ones with the top uais. thereforem that may be a contributing factor to hiring people looking at your uni.

well not really, uai is just an indicator of how well u did in a certain set of tests, its not a deciding factor as to how smart u are!

It's also a remarkably poor predictor of sucess / failure at University, and University performance in general.

well then they should look at your individual uai's. it is possible for someone who got 99.2 and just missed out on unsw to go to uws, scu etc, r even for someone who got an offer at a prestigious uni to choose otherwise..

What are you thoughts?
1. Work Experience - Reports from previous employers
2. University (I don't want a Wollongong Law grad)
3. Personal Skills (I don't want a Uni medallist that can't talk)

That's in order of most important to least.

Why has everybody become so patriotic about their unis?

Personally, I would look for

1. Work Experience
2. Communication Skills
3. Grades
4. Uni

Ranked from 1= highest 4= lowest

Lol, that's the only reason people go to good Unis. To get good jobs at the end of it (Assuming they've thought about it).

Who wouldn't want to be a harvard graduate?

i agree wif beaky more... i say interpersonal skills are way more important than which uni u went to... sure good uni give u a better job prosperity, but if u don't cope well, they might as well get some random person who can deal wif these properly...

The only reason I would go for the UOWer is if he/she made a deal with me to work at half pay and twice as much effort.

I'd go for USyd usually because I know the standard of the departments at USyd is much higher than UOW. Especially for engineering.

as we've already determined, just because you have a high enough UAI to get into USYD doesnt make you a good job candidate.
