Has anyone got an ideas to approach the following essay question for consumers:

Assess the effectiveness of legal and non-legal responses to the need for change in consumer law (25 marks)

I was thinking of talking about caveat emptor and the evolution from a marketplace style environment to a more international or less 'face to face' relationship between consumers and suppliers. I assume the legal responses are the state, fed and industry orgs and non-legal is stuff like the media and NGO's.

Has anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks a bunch :) (This section seems pretty quiet)

I would talk about the contemporary issues.

Yeah that would give me space to talk about Product Certification which I know pretty well. This question is annoying me for some reason.

This question is pretty broad.
So all you need is some area of consumer law where there has been problems in for example creditors exploiting consumers or misleading advertising.
So marketing innovations and credit would be two areas that you could use pretty easily.

Ok, I'll look into that. I sort of got confused by the need for 'change'. Change in what? Reforming the law, changing values and standards, consumer protection?

There was actually a second option of question to do which was:

How effective has the law been in responding to contemporary issues concerning consumers. In your response, refer to the regulation of credit.

I ended up switching to the question I just posted, so much easier!

Yeah so change is just the change in law. The law would change with changing values and standards which would afford greater consumer protection.
So even something simple like advertising the addition of the do not call register in response to a change in the standards which the community held (people shouldnt be annoyed by the calls) affording people who don't want the calls greater protection.

Hope that helps.

Caveat emptor is sooooo outdated. Mention it like once in your intro. So many more important/relevant things like the credit code and trade practices.

Here's how I based my consumer essay, which got a great mark in the end:

- Intro
- Contextual paragraph showing the developing need for consumer protection and the role of current consumer legislation like ACL 2010
- Three separate, concise paragraphs addressing contemporary issues from the syllabus and the effectiveness of their legal/non-legal responses (My picks are Credit, Occupational Licensing & Technology)
- Final concluding paragraph w/your evaluation.
