Concentrations of 0.01-0.1ppm (and above) of phosphate stimulate excessive plant growth (algal blooms), which leads to the degradation of a water body (termed eutrophication): less sunlight is able to penetrate into the water body and the biological oxygen demand is increased, which can result in the death of aquatic organisms. It also results in a decreased aesthetic appeal of the water body, and the production of hydrogen sulfide which is unpleasant and undesired.

A colorimeter can be used. Alternatively, a test using ammonium molybdate can be used - however, in-depth knowledge of this specific method is unrequired by the syllabus.

Spot on, AAS.
