Say we get various pictures and are told to use it in a short story. A picture of a birthday cake, a picture of a lonely house on a hill, a picture of a crowded street etc etc...how deeply would we have to implement it into our story? Is it enough to just mention it briefly or would we have to base the entire story around it.

It depends on the second part of the question. It might say

- Include this as the basis of your piece
- Use this as a central idea for your piece
- Include this somewhere in your piece
- Use this as the first sentence of your narrative.

Etc, etc.

generally it should be a fairly important part of your writing. its usually not enough just to briefly mention it in passing. of course it does depend on what the question specifies but if it was me i'd make it a key element.

Not TOO important
Generally in the marking criteria (at least for trial examinations), the stimulus depth is the same for band 5 and band 6, so don't make it absolutely, almightily, god fearingly, sensually, daringly, exotically, all encompassingly the centre of your writing

the stimulus just has to be used in a way that it is significant to the story, but not necessarily the central idea.
