So keen is the Prime Minister to get this new global-warming treaty signed that he's been appointed a "friend of the chairman" to tie up loose ends.

So here's the question: is Rudd really going to approve a draft treaty that could force Australia to hand over an astonishing $7 billion a year to a new and unelected global authority?

Plus, says paragraph 17 of annex III E, developed countries such as Australia should "compensate for damage" to the economies of poorer countries "and also compensate for lost opportunities, resources, lives, land and dignity" allegedly caused by our gases.

The powers this board will have over us are astonishing. For a start, it will check our emissions, and could "impose financial penalties, at a minimum of 10 times the market price of carbon, for any emissions in excess".

Work it out: if we exceed our emissions target by, say, as much as Rudd warned two years ago we'd overshoot by 2012, we'd be up for a fine of $1.4 billion even with the very lowest carbon price under Rudd's plan.

Even if we reduce our emmisions to nothign and begin living in mud huts, it wont do JACK SHIT on the global scale of things. We wont even be reducing glovbal emisisons by .01%. Likewise, every citizen could own 20 SUVs each and run them 24 hours a day in our front yards and it wouldnt even register on the graph. Why are we and our ecconomy going to be so severely punished for something that is the fault of other goverments overseas?

Firstly, why are you quoting from the Herald Sun? It's a tabloid piece of shit, all the worst parts of The Australian but without a shred of credibility.

Secondly, the emissions reduction of Australia, whilst relatively ineffectual on a global scale, occupies an important symbolic place in the eyes of many developing nations since we are the highest emitters per capita. The world has to start somewhere - and it's more or less a given that it's starting with the developed countries.

Warming halted in 2001.....yeah, coz like the hottest 10 years have totally not been in the past 15 according to NASA..... =/ (don't look at me, just devoting as much time to this crucial point as your laughable article).

Thirdly, the points about the inadequacy of the UN are totally misrepresented. It was in fact countries like the US and Australia who forced the UN to corruption, either by being constantly in arrears in funding or by simple boycotting or ignoring UN activities, resulting in happenings like Libya becoming a head figure in the Human Rights Commission. Furthermore, the point is not really relevant to the situation at hand anyway because other reasons for this appointment include stipulations on sovereign immunity in the UN charter which do not apply in the current case.

The whole shebang's up in the air at the moment anyway. Notice the provisos in that article: "could approve a draft treaty..." ".....could hand over our money......"
