Anyone do it/know anyone that does it? Any good?

I was planning on it but chose law at the last minute. Wondering if I made the right choice. Did sound like fun.

Its ok but when I was doing it at UWS it was just a major in the social science degree. I don't know what the job prospects are like but it is very social sciency and theoretical at the beginning, I didn't get to start the second year subjects though.

I was planning on working for ASIO when I get my degree, or the AFP.

UNE is the only uni in NSW I could see that has a full fleged criminology degree but it didn't seem as 'designer' as law so I figured law would be better off. Not so sure now, though. I guess everyone has doubts when they first start their degree.

Look at CSU, they have a full criminology degree which is combined with the policing degree.

Griffith University’s Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice, offered through Open Universities Australia, is a broad-based social science degree examining crime, the criminal justice system and related social issues. It is a multidisciplinary degree with study focusing on psychology, sociology, law and political science.

It's by distance but you can still do it full-time.

Just wondering if anyone is doing a Bachelor of Criminology @ Deakin Uni?
Or even just a criminology degree in general.

*What is the workload like? Is there a lot of essays/research/theory (just assuming as its an arts degree??)

*If anybody is 2nd or 3rd year, what do you plan do to after you graduate?

i have only just started considering criminology as a possible area to study after I leave school.
I've always been pretty interested in crime in real life, and crime shows on tv and I'm always thinking ahead, trying to work out who committed the crime LOL. I always analyse why people do it and that sort of thing..
So yeah, its something to think about..

im not certain what state you're in , but I know in vic, it is offered at Deakin and you can major in it at alot of other universities.

Umm, yeah the study of criminology has gained popularity due to these crime shows...

but perhaps a warning must be given in that not everything is as it is on television.
(the real life could be more boring and slow.)

I just thought about criminology just because I had considered becoming a police officer at one stage of my life and also because I am already studying psychology.

And mmm apparently it is good at Deakin..

My brother is going to Deakin Geelong next year, so I may go to their open day this year and check it out and ask about the course (hopefully by then, I haven't changed my mind 30 times on what I want to do)

I too had considered becoming a police officer, but am now thinking I'd like to try and aviod that, and work higher up in a specialist area eg organised crime, sex crime, anti terrorism =D
And yes, probably television shows portray the job to be alot better than it actually is lol

I fucking love study.
I admit.. I AM A NERD.
I am not sure that I actually want to enter the work force I just want to study my life.. and perhaps travel overseas every now and again.
Is that possible lol?

You're probably the first person I've meet (online haha) to actually LOVE study, which is a really good thing. I wish I had a passion for studying, its just a lack of motivation in my case.
But there is certainly no harm in getting every single degree possible haha. Sounds like a good plan though: do some study, get a job, take some leave & go overseas, and return

My bro will be studying Business Information Systems. He originally planned to do a management course, but his enter wasn't high enough =(. He is planning on doing the first year and transferring into another course. Or he may decide to not go all together ?

Cause I am not sure that I cannot afford to fund my education =/
For the most part, on selfish reasons .. lol

Ahhh. Business Information Systems. Computers aye. Computers didn't really suit me as an individual. I didn't want to end up a depressed fat fuck on a computer (this is not to say it happens to everybody in this field).. I figured I deserved better! And plus, I seemed only entertained by the maths in my course.
And with computer programming, I rather self teach.

The thing is, he isn't really interested in that field and working with computers. I think he only chose it as a last resort and cos it had the word 'business' in it. He is probably better of to find a job and if he wants to do some study, complete a tafe qualification in business management or marketing.

maths entertains you? woah, you're my hero

& education should cost less, or better yet be free. I would love to do heaps of little short courses in things that I'm interested in but don't want to pursue as a career, but they cost $200-$300 depending on what you want to do pffft

just guessing, but i reckon that the first few chapters of our crim textbook was fair criminology- all that stuff on Criminalisation, the process as punishment, the 'two tiers of justice', technocratic justice, the role of the the criminal law, the ubiquity of discretion in the pre-trial process, police powers, move to videotaping etc etc (i reali enjoyed reading this stuff by the end of it)

Alot of the information came from academics such as R Hogg (I think he is a criminologist at University of New England-) they appear to be leaders in this field of reseach within Australia.

In fact, we didnt reali get into any law until we got up to elements of criminal offences such as Actus Reus/Mens Rea
