so... is ur back supposed to be completely vertical the whole way thru? as in perpendicular to the floor for the entire lift?
No. You don't need spotters either, if you drop the weight it hits the floor, not you.

Basically set the bar up, stand in front of it, plant your feet (width etc, get them in your comfy position), bend at the hips and set your grip. Keep your spine neutral and your back tight, drive through your heels and break at the hips, pull that motherfucker up. When you have the bar up and locked out (you will be standing slightly leaning backwards) you lower it.

If you are having trouble with keeping your back straight, you can look up a little bit, but its prob better to ask someone to check out your form. Depending on your build, you may scrape the bar up your shins, that's normal. The closer the bar is to your body, the better your leverage.

Depending on the variation of it you are doing, your legs can be bent or straight at the start. Straight legged is sometimes referred to as Romanian deadlift.

My deadlift's at 160kg for 1x5 and is showing no signs of stopping. My routine:

Monday:
- Squat ATG: 3x5
- Bench/shoulder press (alternating) 3x5
- Bent row: 3x5

Wednesday:
- Squat ATG (80% of 5 rep max): 2x5
- Bench/shoulder press (alternating) 3x5
- Deadlift: 1x5

Friday:
- Squat ATG: 3x5
- Bench/shoulder press (alternating) 3x5
- Bent row: 3x5
*Accessory*
*Barbell curls: 2x10*
*Skullcrushers: 2x10*
*Weighted sit ups: 2x15*

40kg in total (everything loaded on the barbell), no way near enough.

i bench it, 3 reps of 10, but soon im gonna have to increase it.

You remember to count the barbell too? Depending on what type of barbell you have, it's at least 8-20kgs.

you should perfect your form before trying to lift anything heavier. 40kg sounds good for that.

yeah next saturday arvo i'll try deadlifting 40kg in perfect form before i think about stepping up.

never done deadlifts before, but since it mainly requires legs i reckon i'd be able to do at least 70-80kg.

I've been lifting for about 3 months on Rippetoe's routine, I'm 6' and 83kg, up from 78. Weight's getting harder to put on now though, I worked out the other day I need 4K calories to grow :(

Mate, when you can put 140kg on your back, let alone 100kg, and squat down till your arse presses against your calves and come back up to do it again for 3x5 you'd also be pretty proud.
