Since i got early entry into the bachelor of science, I’ve fell off my studies quite a bit but after looking deeper into it from my understanding job opportunities for bio are really not that great.
I guess i didn’t really research before because i was kinda applying for early entry in a rush and just wanted to get into a course.
I considered doing other degrees for a few days but tbh the thought of not doing bio in some form kind of depresses me. So i’ve decided maybe i could go for a bachelor of science/computer science at UOW, it’d be a stepping stone so i could still pursue something science -related in the future meanwhile computer science could provide job stability while i figure stuff out .. is this even a good plan? I honestly have no idea.
Also I feel like i screwed myself over already since i doubt i would get into any courses by ATAR at this point. So i’d probably have to do the early entry for bachelor of science at UOW and then transfer.
But yeah i honestly don’t know what to do at this point, I feel very indecisive
Also I know i posted about this before but i still feel really lost, been trying to work out a plan for this mess i got myself into for the past few days

Generally speaking just doing a bachelor of science or advanced science degree there aren't that many jobs directly related to it. There may be some things but narrower job opportunities vs other types of undergraduate degrees

Usually if you are doing this type of degree you will need to do a masters or PhD in them to get a broader range of job opportunities

So if you are unsure about that aspect of doing further studies then yeah doing a double degree is probably a good choice

You can be a bio teacher
I mean this can come in multiple ways go in and explore deeper into the bachelor of science majoring in Biology or Biochemistry or something and then do Masters of Education. Or you can do a double degree up to you albeit Bachelor of Science/Education (Biology), or pathology which enables you to look into Biology and Chemistry.

But there is a strong note if you listen to Hivaclibtibcharkwa's advice please note you need to know how you can find ways to teach your content so that students will be interested in what you have to say and will be engaged and in turn give society more STEM students.

Note you would need to develop another set of skills which in this case interpersonal skills which is communicating with students what you know and such. That was only one thing but there might be more.

Or you can do something else related to Biology who knows.

Honestly I think the problem comes from society viewing science degrees as the ultimate degrees that lead to job success. So many people study science to ensure they have a good future. But we only find out in the end how little jobs there. Unless your doing medicine there are very little high paying science jobs.

All my back ups jobs are in the business field being accounting, finance etc.. since there minimal jobs I can actually get with my science degree
i actually considered just going into med school since i have a pathway there through med science in mcq but i heard most people don’t get in and that they’re very high-stress jobs. im not sure what to do

Let's admit this how far do you intend to study Biology?

Yeah there’s that too, i don’t think i wanna stay in uni any longer than 4-5 years
Im still considering doing something related to bio, but it feels like i don’t really have any options with a bachelors degree only.

Keep in mind that the med science pathways aren't guaranteed pathways into medicine, although, universities love to advertise and say these degrees are 'stepping stones' into medicine. There are a few disadvantages of it though: if you don't get into medicine successfully (which you need to be pragmatic about, there are no viable career pathways with a medical science degree and just to get an interview, you need to rank very highly in the med sci cohort, and it becomes very competitive and potentially toxic, almost flashbacks to Year 12 pre-HSC conditions).

There are jobs but you need further qualifications usually such as masters or PhD, so it is a very competitive type of area of study where you need to be academically capable and willing to dedicate more than 4 years to achieving that goal. This is because in the undergraduate degree alone for the first 3 years I would say you don't learn much actual practical stuff that would be relevant to an actual job. It's more learning about theory and getting some lab experience to build a solid foundation. In 4th year where you do an honours that is where you learn the most because it's no longer following a recipe like experiment where you just follow some steps and repeat them. You have instead work out how to do things yourself, problem solve and direct your own research and ideas.

Unfortunately though it's only 1 year of that so you can't possibly develop all the skills necessary and so that's why the masters and PhD are kind of important to this type of study area. You can think of the masters and PhD as being the equivalent of actual work experience for science degrees. It is similar to the honours but you have way more time to explore things in more detail and improve your skills.

Good thing though is in Australia the masters and PhD is basically free in science. You don't have to pay any of the fees like you do in undergraduate and the government actually pays you approximately a 30k scholarship on top of that as well for things like living expenses so that extra time you spend at uni isn't going to damage you financially and will actually improve your skills a lot and make you far more employable if your goal is to go work in industry. In saying that though gaining admission and scholarship for masters of PhD is a competitive process and you have to have performed well in your degree particularly in the honours year. So it's a degree area you have to be very dedicated to academics as the marks are actually quite important for undergraduate unlike other degrees you can get away with like a 60-70 if you got some good experience.

So I would disagree with your statement partially in terms of there not being any jobs. It depends on what type of science you do. If you are just doing something like a medical science with little actual use for it in the real world as it's mainly just a gateway degree to get into medicine then yeah you are going to be left with poor employment opportunities. That is because the medical science degree doesn't go into insane detail into subject areas and so you will end up not having any actual specialisation that will give you an advantage over others in area. For example if someone who did a medicinal chemistry degree for example they have an advantage on the medical science person because they would have a superior lab knowledge since in medicinal chemistry you have to learn both pharmacology and chemistry subjects in detail such as organic chemistry 2nd and 3rd year, as well as analytical chemistry. Also in the same respect someone who did a biochemistry or biology based major they will have more skills in that specific area than someone who did medical science.

So it is more about what type of science degree and major you choose because there will be a large distinction between which ones are good for getting jobs and which aren't as much. Only way to figure that out is not to just read what the uni advertises because obviously they are going to just say it's a very useful degree even when it might not be. Need to do your own research on other websites and ideally ask people who are older and have done degrees in those areas for advice

In your case find something that you can do with the actual degree such as CS or for seriousness, pair that up with Bachelor of Science/Education (Pathology) but seriously do you like working with children and watching them succeed and are you keen to work with them till they are able to find success themselves? if not then that is not your pathway and find something else. Explore yourself, what do you like doing outside of your studies. If you love helping fellow students on this website with that subject queries then a path would have being carved for you already.
