Just a different name, they toyed with the idea of changing B.Com to B.Bus at unsw..

IMHO B.Com sounds better though.

As far as the universities here are concerned, they the two degrees are the same.. you have to do basic accounting, maths and economics for all of them, and you get to do the same majors.

As a general rule I think degrees with more specific names sounds worse... It makes your degree sound like a trade certificate.

to prove my point here are the core units for BBus at UTS

22107 Accounting for Business 6cp
79203 Business Law and Ethics 6cp
21129 Managing People and Organisations 6cp
24108 Marketing Foundations 6cp
25115 Economics for Business 6cp
25300 Fundamentals of Business Finance 6cp
26134 Business Statistics 6cp
Select 6 credit points from the following options: 6cp
22207 Accounting Transactions and Business Decisions 6cp
21193 Business Strategy 6cp

At unsw commerce you have:

* ACCT1501 Accounting & Financial Mgt 1A (6 UOC)
* ACCT1511 Accounting & Financial Mgt 1B (6 UOC)
* ECON1101 Microeconomics 1 (6 UOC)
* ECON1102 Macroeconomics 1 (6 UOC)
* ECON1202 Quantitative Methods A (6 UOC)
* ECON1203 Quantitative Methods B (6 UOC)

and people usually do FINS 1612 or 1613, marketing or intro to business law.. it's not hard to match the courses up.

the majors available are virtually identical

unsw core units which are maths related: 6/6 = 100%
If you consider accounting maths related then everything is maths related..

unsw acct i remember was enough to be maths related. there were a lot of ratios to remember and also there was some basic maths in managerial accounting in accounting 1b.

there was enough maths in micro and macro to deter anyone who was thinking of skimming some maths but not a lot of it.

ok fine even if we dont calculate accounting as maths related unsw combines their accounting course with finance and im pretty sure that finance is maths related.

uts: core units related to maths 2/8 = 25%

unsw: core units related to maths 6/6 = 100%

I kind of Agree. The thing is it's not really that mathsy at UNSW....more financial type stuff- easily dealt with a calculator. It also depends on the electives you choose for your finance major that will determine whether or not it has too much mathematical content in it.

fundamentally, it is exactly the same degree - it is ridiculous to argue otherwise.

yes, names are different. but many of the core subjects for bus/com are taught by the same staff across the sydney universities (most commonly sydney and uts) and they pretty much teach exactly the same content.
