d/dx(x^2) = 2x (bring down the power to a coefficient and reduce the power by 1)

d/dx(x-1) = 1 (constants go to zero because they have x^0 next to them, so you're multiplying by zero when you bring the power down to coefficient. x goes to 1 because it's power is initially 1 so when you differentiate it becomes 1 times x^0)

d/dx(x^4 + 5x^(-1) ) = 4x^3 -5x^(-2) (with negative powers, the negative sign comes down with the power, and always remember when you reduce the negative power, it become -2 rather than zero. Just a silly mistake I used to make a lot)
