Difficulty between CHEM1011 and CHEM 1031? (1 Viewer)

I did chemistry in year 12 but why should I choose CHEM 1031 if there is an easier option? I'm just wondering if I would cope, that's all Is it necessary for honours or is it a prerequsite for something?

What's your program/major?

Say if you are doing Advanced Science in Chemistry, then you have to do Higher Chem. Scaling is also a factor when you doing higher versions.

I'm just doing straight science and arts. Not too sure on my science major but it's sure not chemistry. Leaning more towards genetics and majors similar to that.

Ugh... more scaling... so how does scaling at uni work then?

Scaling works differently for different subjects. From what I've noticed, if you do average in a Higher subject, that would be better than doing fairly well in a normal subject. But it's ultimately up to the coordinator.

I wouldn't worry about that too much. You can choose either, it shouldn't matter. For the WAM calculation, doing Higher or normal makes no difference. A mark of 80 in higher and a mark of 80 in normal is the same thing. But it's the amount of effort required which matters.

I did higher chemistry and had friends do regular, from what I recall of first semester, there wasn't that much difference between the two. In Chem1011 you spend time at the beginning going over some basic stuff that I think is omitted altogether from higher (stuff you would have done in high school). In terms of content, I think the only glaring difference was M.O theory, which higher did but regular didn't. It can be difficult to understand at first, but it's definitely not impossible. Other than that, the only consistent difference is that you will get more questions in labs and tutorials and the final exam (the mid-semester exam is the same for everyone).

i think you would be better off in the long term doing chem1031 but shouldnt really matter since you arent planning to pursue a chem major.

Yeah I read that too. Don't think it'll be too hard really. If it's better for me in the long term, I think I'll do it. I'm sure I'll cope because the prerequsite for this course is year 12 chemistry so I should be fine.

It's hard to say, I think 1031 scales better. But, regardless of which you do, you will have to put in work, I personally don't think it's that much more of a stretch to do 1031. But, you can always do 1031 and drop down to 1011.

Even if you did HSC Chem, what mark would you approx. need to cope with 1031? I called the science faculty and they're like as long as you pass HSC chem then you should be fine in 1031 but I struggled with chem quite a bit. :s

^I went to the science advising day and the guy for chem told me that chem1031 is recommended for those that got atleast b5 in their HSC chem exam and you should do fine as long as you work hard

I did chem1031 and knew people that did chem1011. They teach you the same concepts/ideas in chemistry. In higher chemistry you, every now and then, just expand on that CHEM1011 knowledge just a little - maybe like one more mini idea added onto the chem1011 thing. But you do learn the same stuff.
Apart from the teaching, chem1011 also has easier computer weekly assignment (just a couple of questions you have to complete every week on a computer), but they're only a bit easier anyways. Also every now and then for chem1031 (or maybe it was 1041 higher chem B which is for 2nd sem) you have to do a little more for prac work for your labs.
