Pentagon Delays Troop Call - WSJ.com

Obama apparently has dismissed the top commander in Afghan General McChrystal's request for more troops.

I don't know how this constitutional lawyer with arts degree and his dear "top in the class" international relation specialist Joe Biden think exactly.

But it seems to me that, by rejecting more troops, the Democrats have declared defeat. If so, why are Australian lives being risked there to fight a war given up by US?

Without the help of additional resources and time, Talibans will win. Tackling an insurgency, not to mention this is insurgency+opium trade, will take decades to complete. Check history.

It will take a painfully long time to build up an effective military for Afghanistan because this country started from zero, unlike Iraq which at least had a mature military force before. It'll take even longer for Afghan economy to develop to a degree that few would join Talibans. And without additional military assistance, how can Afghan economy develop?

Probably Obama should get a course in the defence academy as well.

SO, if Obama has given up, why are Australian troops still there?

You had to make quite a lot of leaps of faith and assumptions to get to your conclusion there. Feel good about yourself now?

Any chance you can come back to these forums when you're not so shit?

Pretty sure the people of the Oruzgan province who have been released from the scourge of the Taliban won't think it was in vain.

Except for all the dead ones.

But it's ok to bomb the shit out of 20 family members as long as you knock off one terrorist.

Piss off.

TBH I haven't followed Afghanistan very closely but I think the goal of completely removing the Taliban was ultimately doomed to fail. The entire country is shit, it's lawless and every government has been corrupt and ineffective. The taliban and other groups will always exist when there are uneducated peasents/farmers who don't understand their religion properly and are vulnerable to getting picked up by groups like the Taliban when they are offered money/power and virgins in heaven.

Of course I could be wrong and we could end up rebuilding it and turn it into a beautiful flourishing peaceful nation - but I do know our troops have made good progress and haven't died in vain.

Afghanistan & Pakistan are where empires come to die. Obama and Biden have made the right choice by not allowing more troops.

Smart choice.

Even if we do fix Afghanistan, the problem is that the Taliban has just moved to Somalia. And if we go into another long, bloody peacekeeping mission in Somalia after Afghanistan, would the Taliban then just move to, say, Yemen? And that's assuming Pakistan doesn't collapse in the mean-time.

It's a depressing problem.

Why are they necessarily where empires come to die?

Just because in the past this happened?

If Afghanistan became Taliban again, I'm pretty sure that would make Pakistan and others countries much more susceptible to extremist influence than now.
