Directing a short film (1 Viewer)

As I intend on going to film school, I need to build a portfolio. I intend to produce a short film this year (senior year).

I wanted to remake scenes from an existing film. Would this be acceptable, permitting I acknowledged that it was based on a movie?

Also what would I need to consider in creating a short film? I can hire a camera from school, but what else?

You'd be better off creating something new (even if you're working from an existing script), rather than recreating something already filmed.
