this is something i heard lately, not much as i know of but im just curious even though i dont know much about it. if you apply for disadvantage through your hsc, with whatever excuse you have etc and if approved you can earn up to 10% points for your UAI. i think you go through the process of being interviewed etc correct me if im wrong.. i heard alot of people are going to do this incase they get a lower mark etc and there's another way to get extra points of 5% if your school is from western sydney etc

its called EAS (Educational Access Scheme)

inteneded for people who have a disadvanatage over year 11 + 12 for a certain amount of time

I am applying for the extra or 'bonus' as they call it UAI points under the Educational Access Scheme. Application forms are available from your careers adviser. Applications are due in by September 30 if you want to be considered for the main round uni offers. Applications lodged after this date are subject to a late payment fee.

There is no interview process, just a form to fill out which requires yourself, your school and a medical specialist to complete (if the problem is medical related).

I am applying because I have a severe form of arthritis which affects most joints in my body and a lung disease.

You can apply for various reasons including a medical disability (physical or psyciatric), you moved interstate after the beginning of year 11, you have missed long periods of schooling because of a non-medical related condition, you have experienced exceptional financial hardship, death of an immediate or close friend or family member, work requirements to support your family.

Many reasons are listed.

Each uni has a different scheme. For example Sydney Uni will allow the allocation of an offer if your UAI is within 5 points of the published main round cut off. The university of technology on the other hand allows you to recieve an offer if your UAI is within 10 points of the published main round cut offs. Some unis have the scheme available to all courses, while others don't E.g. Newcastle uni doesn't allow the extra points for its medicine or law degrees.

This scheme shouldn't be abused and should only be used if you really do have a disadvantage.

I know someone who abused the system- quite pathetic actually. This person lives near a club, and she complained about how the fireworks disrupted her, even though these fireworks occur twice a year and only for about 15 minutes. She was accepted.

The funny thing is that I live right behind this club, and it didn't disrupt whatsoever. I even had a renovation done at my house and that also didn't interfere with my studies.

If you have a genuine problem that has extended to your education, you'll have familiarised yourself with at least one of your school's welfare officers/psychologist/whatever. They need to know your situation so they can attest to your disadvantage and judge it's affect on your education. You also need documentation from various authorities, depending on the codes you apply under. I'm applying under 5 codes - I could have applied under about 6, but there's only room on the form for 5 - and I need police reports, psychologists reports, Centrelink reports, medical reports, and other assorted legal documents.

The psychologist at my school told me last year that she wouldn't sign Access applications for people who demand it of them in August/September (IE just before you have to apply) if they've never seen them at all during school - unless it's something that's only *just* happened.

im not applying for it, i wanted to know what the fuss is all about this going around people's minds lately, and wanted to know what it really is..
alot of students are bragging about it lately.

I don't think you actually get extra uai points. That is, its not mentioned on your actual certificate or anything, it only allows you entry into a particualr course that requires a higher uai.

so if you have a teacher that is totally shit and had like 187 complaints aggainst him and he come in every day and does nothing ? can i complain?

Unfortunately many teacher's are deemed to be "crap" and there is no point doing anything about it now. Year 12 is more independent study anyway.

EAS is for people who are really disadvantaged- eg. there was a death in the family, family problems, etc.

A few people are applying at my skool, I wish I could because I have reduced periods for 3 or my 5 subjects which is my bloody skool's fault, but there is no provision for me. I only wish I could apply because I am worried that this will have a negative effect on my UAI, oh well I'll just have to work xtra hard

well, u really dont get extra uai pts, it just reduces ur required uai cut off mark

i'm applying and know of a few people that are.

but asscookie, you may not be familiar with your school's counsellors/therapists or whatever cause they might not know cause you've gone to outside counsellors

like i'm not getting anyone from my school to sign it cause i have someone outside of school who can write it up for me.
