How are you finding it? I'm curious to know because I may sign up for Physics via distance education.

Is this through OTEN you're talking about?

I'm doing German continuers through the open high school. It'd be good if I had some form of work ethic, but unfortunately... ><

yea, im doing it through OTEN

i guess its ok...i would prefer it if there was a class but becasue i love textiles that sort of makes it a bit easier. one downside it that because textiles is heavily relaint on the practical side its really difficult if there is someting i dont understand for my teacher to explain over the phone.

but if it is a subject that you love or need for uni give distance a go...just make sure that you are organised and dont get behind, im about a month behind and i have two assessments and an exam due next term =[

I do physics and history extension through Dubbo Distance Ed. The key to distance ed is to make sure you have the motivation to do it, and keep it up for the entire course.

Hi there to all those Year 11, 2010 students, looking for something SUPER interesting and pretty easy to study as a subject for your HSC? Well, we've got it!

It's Studies of Religion through Distance Education and you can enrol with us through your own High School. Our Distance Eductaion campus is based in Northern NSW and you can enrol with us, as a single-subject student, studying at your own pace, in the privacy of your own room at home or with the resources of your own school library. How's that for comfort!

It's a fascinating comparative course of the world's great religions - Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism. The course gives you an insight into how these great religions have shaped human history; and takes you on a tour of the sacred texts, practices and faith beliefs of these great religions. Valuable knowledge for our multi-cultural world we live and work in!

Check out our website and send us an email or an SMS. - It's as cool as that!

Cheers,

Your friendly SOR Team :music:

I do French Continuers by Open High School. I enjoy it as I love the French language and find my French teacher awesome and very passionate towards French.

I'm finding it OK but I'm way behind in work. I suck at time management.

French Beginners...I don't regularly call me teacher or do the units but I'm going to have to pick up my slack for year 12! The prelims weren't that bad considering 90% of my studying was 2-3 days before and my mum used to be a French teacher so...

I'm doing Bio and Ancient History through Sydney Distance Education High. I love it, but before somebody jumps into it I do have a couple of warnings;

  • It's a lot of work. Personally, I think it's a lot more than most students have to do - mainly because it's a LOT of reading and writing. (I thought this was fine until I actually started. It's VERY difficult to get started, and when you do, frequent breaks are recommended. I have always read a lot, but I started getting severe headaches from eye strain, just from the work I had to do.)
  • There's an obvious lack of communication, unless you're incredibly dedicated. The teachers (I don't know whether it's the same with other schools but I'm assuming it is) are very busy, so it's extremely difficult to get a hold of them when you need them. And sometimes, the work simply doesn't arrive; I had an exam on Friday for Bio, which I'm pretty sure I failed, simply because a package of study notes and work not previously included in my work didn't arrive in time. This was partially my fault - I didn't email my teachers early enough for them to realise this study pack never did arrive. I would say that you get a hold of your teachers the second you know when your exams or assignments will be due, and ask them what is expected and if you can have extra resources.
These are just warnings, though, for anybody thinking of jumping right in. It takes a lot of organisation and motivation to go anywhere in the course. But it works very well for me, besides the occasional hiccup, and I would recommend it to anyone who thinks they could manage it.

I do my entire schooling through distance, with Sydney Distance Education.

AND I HATE IT!

Firstly, you dont recieve the work in a continuious flow, its in dribs and drabs, the teachers have multiple emails and phone calls from me about my work or no work arriving, ect,ect.. and it hasnt gotten better.

Another thing is you are ALONE, you have no idea if anyone else in the area is doing it, so you cant get their ideas, or study with them, the study days are stupid, they dont cover the work you are doing at that point in time, they go back like 4-6 weeks, so you have no idea, or you get extremly bored.

Another thing is we are supposed to have a "regular school experience."
I'd love to know how being alone, not getting help from teachrs who say to call or email if you have any problems or questions, and they NEVER REPLY.

Normal school includes:
  • Formal (year 10 & 12 usually)
  • Social interaction (Lunch and recess)
  • Teacher is there in front of you.
It also includes
  • Distractions from students
  • Bullying
Distance includes
  • Higher marks, because you do it on your own.
  • work at your own pace
But it also has
  • Lonliness (Due to alone)
  • NO FORMAL
  • you dont know anyone really.
I like it in some aspects, but i hate being alone.

my friends at normal school, and 98% of this website are lucky..

I don't really understand the benefits of Distance over normal school. I can see why you would do it for a subject or two, if you loved it and your school did not offer it, apart from that it just seems a little weird.
