do you have to read the economist to go well in the exam? (1 Viewer)

I have heard of some people subscribing to the economist and using these as a main study guide, what are your thoughts on this? does anyone hear subscribe to it? do you have to subscribe because i havent seen them for sale individually in newsagencies

No. If you watch the news or read the economics news online, there is no real need to get a specialist piece of information like the economist. just keep up to date with u/e, inflation and the like and you should be fine

I havent even heard of the economist and did quite well. but i dont imagine reading it would bring any harm

I dont think its needed as LordPc said its important to stay up to date. i found the best was the leading edge economic updated and the tim (someone) updates. My teacher subscribed to these and then just photocopied them for us but they came in really handy and i think i did reasonably well

no, of course you dont.

Why on earth would you need to? The multi and short answers will come from your textbook, you wont need any current event information at all. For the two essays, the sources given in one will be all the current statistics you need, and for the other just memorise a few statistics and your done.

Reading the economist is a waste of time, imo.

it's not necessary but it does help you in your extended responses if you know what's going on in the economy

No its probably more of a distraction than a help. Most of the stuff in the economist is not related to the HSC course.

he writes at HSC economics level, and explains terms and such and how they affect the economy. I do believe that the Leading Edge textbook even mentions him as a great writer for HSC students on one of the very first pages. So if you have to read something, thats what you should read

ahhhh yes, the infamous Ross Gittins, the man that has been fuelling many of our eco classes at school. highly recommend u read this guy's work, especially his latest book 'Gittinomics', bought it just last week - highly influential guy

i guess, he expresses his opinions of the effects of political decisions and how they reflect on the economy in a very blunt perspective, not being afraid to say what he wants.

Hmm I hate the hype around ross gittins.

Please beware that whilst sometimes he can write relevant articles to the Hsc he is almost always biased and does not present the counterarguement very well

I didn't read it during the first half of yr 12, but during the second half I began reading it online, i even downloaded the economist audio book. I began to realize that I could write so much about current issues in econ essays. I would say it helped me heaps. Currently, I am still reading it, they are a great fun. =)

reading additional information never hurts any1. to be honest, i didnt use any of these mumbo jumbo... except for the newspapers (ross gittens in the smh is a good source). quite frankly, just make up some quotes from chief economists ... like the teachers will ever know.

I must say I was never particularly keen on Ross Gittins' work. I think he is too opinionated to be used as a good source for essay material - and opinion (apart from some of the "evaluate" questions) don't form much of the criteria for essay success. I went to a lecture he presented during the HSC and all he did was relay facts and figures - which I found really uninspiring.

See some of quarterly statements on MP from the RBA website - most parts can be read adn understood by 12th graders. Bloomberg.com is probably the best for up to date info.
