For modern history and ancient history, the core study section of the HSC already provides you with sources and you answer off those using your own knowledge as well.

Does this mean that it is useless to know your own sources for the core studies of the histories?

No, its always better to refer to other sources and knowledge to support your answer if you're seeking full marks for each question. The question almost always says "using sources X and Y, as well as your own knowledge" meaning you should have a substantial understanding about each syllabus point beyond just the sources provided in the exam.
Don't quote on this for modern, as I don't do it, but I don't imagine it is different though.

hell yeah you need other sources. its best to have solid, versatile quotes, minimises stuff you have to remember and maximises marks. for ancient, when you get onto your historical period- id recommend also knowing which book the source is from, just helps to show more knowledge around topic.
