if australia had a referendum (in like the near future) to decide whether it would become a republic, would the population say yes?

curious bc in contemporary ways australia already has some independent views/actions but in a traditional sense the country is very much still tied to england and a large population of australians have english heritage.

the most recent polls (early 2023) indicate that around 54% would vote for a republic right now and 46% against, but imo that isn’t really a big enough margin for it to have a high likelihood of actually passing

It would depend a lot on the question, and on whether it had bipartisan support. Howard demonstrated how a determined opponent can do a lot of damage to a "yes" campaign, and Dutton would likely campaign against it. Also, if the model became the central issue, some voters wanting a republic but with a different model could be motivated to vote "no" in the belief that the change is inevitable and so it is reasonable to wait for their preferred model to be proposed.

honestly who absolutely gives a fucking shit

its not compelling eitherway and will make no difference to absolutely anything

of all the things that are happening in either australia or the world that have real material consequences on your existence purely symbolic affairs like the voice, gay marriage and is what australians want to debate and obsess over

we deserve to eat all the shit we're served if that's the case

legacy australians truly are the dumbest cunts on earth

anyone who cares strongly about making australia a republic is an absolute fucking dickhead honestly

there's no practical reason why they would care so much, it's entirely ideologically motivated, especially by anglo hate

but the monarchy will fall in the UK at some point, even if we don't vote to become a republic before hand (but we probably will in the next few decades)

that fucking dickhead harry will be the eldest living heir and he'll find a way to end it to make himself look like some progressive hero or some shit

A republic for Australia could be potentially dangerous in that we could end up with the US model where any businessman or celebrity can instantly become President should they receive the popular vote.

In Australia our system is serious, robust and accountable; aspiring PMs need to get elected (and consistently re-elected) by their constituents and rise through the ranks of the Parliamentary Labor or Liberal party in order to have a shot at PM.

Also, there have been no coups, no civil war, no severe social division and we are not a country whose government has an overt malicious far-right or far-left agenda. All of these are possible with a republic.
