well, i agree. but in reality, society IS shallow. and society these days requires you to be a certain size

society doesnt require any one to be of any size

people may want to conform to societys shallow image (whatever it may be)

but you can still be a member of society if you dont conform

i was saying what i said to tell those girls that thinking of a size 8 as "hot" and a size 14 as "fat" is so totally off the mark and insulting. i was a size 14 when i was a kid and i was so nervous about it, and those comments around me made me feel so uncomfortable and triggereed my anorexia and my dream to be "better" through not eating and making myself sick to look like they wanted.

my best mate is a size 8 and shes one of the most attracive girls around, but she doesnt go around saying anyone over a 10 is fat or unattractive. if you knew me, you'd probably know why i said that. but since you dont, you've taken what i said all the wrong way.

i hope you read this and understand.
Two wrongs don't make a right. Like I had said before, calling size 14 girls fat is a unfair generalisation. Countering an unfair generalisation with another, something along the lines of thin girls being stick like, not sexy and not womanly doesn't help you cause. Again whether you had anorexia doesn't change anything. I would think that someone who has experienced it first hand would be well aware of the hurt that can be caused when people classify a dresssize or shape as fat ,'thin' not womanly or not sexy.

im sick of everyone being all like "omg size 14 is soooooo fat" because seriously?... yep. yep. yeh cool.
just because im not a stick and i have hips doesnt make me fat. it means i actually look like a woman. wow. newsflash. and that actually makes me sexy.
Have a read of that...

You actually look like a woman? I bet people with naturally thin hips would totally agree with your summation about having hips making you look actually look like a woman rather than something else. I wonder how people would read that?

azzie, this is totally not directed at you or anyone on the board, its just a general observation. I'm a size 8-10, and even though i do go through 'fat days', im still pretty small generally and I do get offended when size 12-14 girls or 'plus sized' models start harping on about their womanly curves and how much sexier they are then a beanpole., because I find a lot of the time they do compare themselves to smaller sizes and insinuate that smaller girls are unhealthy or unnatural or freaks. Just cos I am smaller doesent mean I don't have curves and can;t be sexy

i find this perpetuated a lot on magazines such as cosmo when they start going on about body love etc, which is contradictory, since they seem to be promoting body love in only sizes 14 and above

I think the real question here is "Do women ever stop whinging about their bodies?"

I'm quite happy with my body, but then I'm a 60/40 mix of pure sex/arrogance, so why wouldn't I be?

I just assumed, when Chloe169 said "we're a bunch of fattys" it was inclusive and light hearted rather than depressive and complaining. If you cant take a stab at yourself, then what can you do. I hope i quoted the right person btw.

Agreed with Ranger Stacie...im a 6-8, i have got the whole anorexia comments over and over. The truth is i have always been this way and have never contemplated starving myself. Like i said earlier, i wish i had a bit more "meat on my bones" but i dont like to be made to feel like i should try to "fatten up" either.

Edit: another thing that sometimes bothers me....the majority of my friends are over size 12. One is around a 16. This isnt the thing that bothers me at all, but it is the comments they make when we go shopping together, like "sorry, nothing will fit me here". That seriously makes me feel bad! Its the one friend in particualr - i have learnt that smaller people should not try to empathise with bigger people. It never goes down well. During discussions with genuine difficulties finding clothes "Oh it must really suck to be skinny". Do you ever hear anyone saying "it must suck to be bigger"?

yeah thats where the whole "skinny bashing" thing comes in

its ok to say to someone size 8 "eat more" but not ok to say to someone size 22 "eat less". I've been humiliated by many people, including my boss at a work dinner "eat more.. you're so scrawny... i dont want you running to the bathroom and puking after i just paid for dinner!" etc etc. They think its ok, but the reverse rarely happens, and if it does, it is frowned upon

im not saying anyone is worse off, if you're tall, short, thin or curvaceous - i'm sure comments and/or being self consious happens to everyone, but people just need a bit of tact. honestly i dont understand why people would comment on those kinds of things, desirable or not.

dude i totally know what you mean. cosmo says you should love your body, but if you see all the ads they have or all the nice clothes are modelled by girls who are a size 6/8. its a bit of a contradiction. they say in the modeling industry that girls of any size can get a job. its crap, most of the job go to size 6ers or 8s. people do that to make people feel better. at the same time all cosmo does for skinny girls is calls them "petit" and shoves them in the "things that are wrong with you" section.

like i said, i know plenty of girls who are size 8 and are so pretty and hot and so on :p i just dont like the attitude some girls take when they're skinny saying size 14 is too big. i know its frustrating the other way too. im sorry if i was offensive, i was pretty ticked off.

Stated by someone earlier, they noted that the average size in Australia is 14.

I always thought that the point of Cosmo in promoting the "bigger models" is for money. They have the sex section AND a big girls section.. it's a win-win situation in terms of retail.

mags like cosmo have a responsibility to the readers to NOT be putting any one body type on a pedestal. I am not an avid cosmo reader, but anytime I've read an article about 'loving your body' or whatnot, there seems to be clear insinuations that you need to be a bigger girl to be curvy and sexy and etc.
