This is the most ridiculous rule in the HSC. If your 2unit mark doesn't count why even do 4u? Might as well come first in 2u and save yourself the stress, time and tuition (money).
if you can breeze through 2u maths and come 1st in the hsc, chances are that if you had picked up 4u maths and tried to breeze through and relax like you did 2u, you would still get a mark that would be better than the 100% in 2u after scaling.

NO MARK except top in the state for 4 unit can beat 100% in 2 unit maths.

Well, it's not easy to come first in 2 Unit.

It's a relatively easy maths, I agree with that. But coming first ain't easy. It requires luck too.

To come first in 2 unit, you need to get 100% basically. And no matter how good you are, there is still a chance that you can make a mistake and simply forget about that.

Imagine getting 119/120 or even slightly lower in 2 unit maths. That should serve you around top 5-10 spot in the state for 2 unit maths. But that's NOT 100/100 scaled mark. More like 98-99s. And if you consider that, you will only have 3 unit of maths.

Now, look at the other way. You have 4 unit maths. That's 4 UNITS OF MATHS. Only one unit more than 3 unit BUT....if you are someone who doesn't have any extension subject or 1 unit subject apart from maths, that can save you the stress of going through another subject to make up for that 1 lost unit by not doing 4 unit.

And I am telling you, 4 unit scales awesome. In 4 unit maths, you can still make mistakes. But it's differnet to 2 unit maths. Losing one mark in 2 unit will cost you heaps generally. But it's little bit different for 4 unit. Since the gap between individual is SO significant that 1 mark hardly makes difference.

In terms of safety issue, IF YOU ARE GOOD AT MATHS, DO 4 unit maths. Don't take to run a risk of doing 2 unit maths SO THAT YOU CAN COME FIRST IN THE STATE.

If you don't come first or top 20 in the state, scaled mark is generally quite shit.

This year, 100 = 100 scaled but, 99 = 95-97 scaled and 98 = 94, you can picture it right?
compared with 4 unit maths, 90 = 91-92, 91 = 92-93 or whatever.
Lol, yeah i need some luck.
But there is no point doing it if you aren't going well in 3u.. 4u has a high average but that is only because the people doing it have worked hard to get in. But yeah i get your point how one error in 2u makes a big difference in comparison to 4u.
I'm just saying that 2u should also be counted for people doing 4u in the same way that 2u English is counted for those doing 4u.

Of course. If you suck at 3 unit, you would never do 4 unit in the first place LOL. But if you do suck at 3 unit, you are not going to be great at 2 unit maths either. (I am not saying that you do)

I don't agree that 2 unit should be counted. For many of 4 unit people, 2 unit maths is just so easy (no offence). 100+ will actually get 100% in 2 unit maths creating imbalance for the state-ranking purposes.

English is definitely different. Getting 100% in 2 unit advanced/standard is really hard. I don't think anyone got 100% in english in the last 5 years (except once or twice)

Not really, for 4 unit English you do not sit an External exam but instead hand in a Major Work.

Don't you guys think that English should be treated in the same way that Maths is in terms of units. Major work or exam there is no difference both are aiming to determine your ability. Both are easy to certain people and difficult to others. In the same way that English has been made compulsory, this system is silly.

Mathematics and English are completely different fields of study. Your argument is invalid.

You know, it's not that silly.

Have a look at 4 unit contents.

If all that was just 1 unit, I would NEVER DO 4 unit maths.

Same story for 3 unit maths.

Haha, guess that's true. 3u English is way easier in terms of content than Advanced. However in English the amount of 'study' you do won't exactly reflect your end result - unlike maths where more study= greater result.
Off topic much.. lol.

i havent looked at the 3u syllabus specifically but 3u didnt seem like that much on top of 2u. like one or two extra formulae per topic isnt that much, except when you get to motion, then things get crazy.

ummm, no. unless you have proof to back this up I wont believe ya since it makes no sense. 4u is much harder than 2u so getting 95 in 4u is much more difficult then getting a 100 in 2u, so i cant see how the 2u mark would be worth more than the 4u mark. just doesnt make sense.
