Does a cohort of <8 mean you get your own mark? (1 Viewer)

is it true that if you have a class of less than 8 people, ranks dont affect your marks and you get your own marks in the hsc, not anyone elses?

I know I've asked this before, but i asked my teacher, who is like the most trustworthy teacher at my school, and she doubled down. I told her that I tried looking for info online and failed, and she told me i need to look at nesa info but I still couldn't find it.

I've been told this by numerous teachers so its not just her, yet I cant find anything about it.

Please someone help me?

As far as I am aware, the moderation process applies regardless of cohort size. In a cohort with 8 or less students, the student ranked first would have their Assessment Mark in a particular subject adjusted to equal the highest HSC exam mark achieved by any student (including themselves) in their cohort for that subject. The same is true regarding the student ranked last, i.e. their Assessment Mark would be adjusted to equal the lowest HSC exam mark achieved by any student (including themselves) in their cohort. Students ranked in between will receive Assessment Marks similar (not necessarily equal) to the equivalent Examination Marks. Of course, relative gaps are also maintained as normal. The following example may help illustrate this information:

• Student A is ranked first in a subject
• Student B achieves the highest HSC exam mark in the cohort.

	Assessment Mark	Examination Mark	HSC mark
Student A	90	80	85
Student B	85	90	88

Instances where a student may receive their own Examination Mark as their Assessment Mark is if they are ranked first internally and also achieve the highest Examination Mark in their cohort. For example, if a student ranked first internally in a particular subject achieves 95 in that subject's HSC exam, and that mark ends up being the highest in their cohort, they will also receive that 95 as their Assessment Mark, leading to an overall HSC mark of 95. Another instance is where there is only one student taking a particular subject, in which case they would receive their Examination Mark as their Assessment Mark. This can also be technically described as having their Examination Mark contribute 100% of their overall HSC mark for the subject.

She is completely wrong, and I could send you my 3u cohort of 3 people that disproves this. Non-selective school teachers are the least reliable source in general on how scaling/alignment/moderation works lol. Just read the NESA moderation website and it will explain everything.

This was my mates in 3u (he was rank 2). First column is exam mark, second is assessment mark/grade. As you can see, his assessment mark was boosted by yours truly since he was sort of close to me internally and I got 96/100 exam mark, hence his rank helped him a lot (boosted his mark by 5/100). My assessment mark/grade was also 96 as I was rank 1 both externally and internally so it became my exam mark.
