I only feel guilty when i download albums from emerging bands and unknown bands. Those bands need the money to expand. However, with internationally known bands/artists I don't feel as much guilt. I try to justify my downloading by going to as many gigs as i can and by telling myself that the bulk of cd sales go to the record companies. :s

Discuss.

Nah. Unknown bands and such need the fame more than the money. So you download their songs to increase fame and then they can get money from all those other do-gooders who do buy their music.

And rich artists who've been in the industry for years, well I'm merely trying to help them against their greedy, materialistic obsession. :)

In the modern age it's impossible to own information, including music, and futile to try to enforce copyright. Information is completely free and I love it.

Bands need to work out alternative income methods.

But then how would artists make a living?
Tour lots?
Yes.
Merchadising, innovative marketing, dvds, extra's, new business models, idk. Be innovative.

Frankly, who cares if artists can't make a living from CD sales. I don't think anyone has an inviolable right to own and control information of any sort.

So on that same token do you believe writers shouldn't get any money for their books. They can just be turned into e-books for everyone to read?

I think all information should be free. The authors can try to make money any way they please, but the idea of copyright is outdated.

Modern internet means this is the only practical morality.

The music industry has changed so much since pre-internet, 90's.

Distribution and access to new artists has become completely globalised. People are by and large, far more musically literate. Think about how much music festivals, and gigs have grown in that time.

Big day out started in 1992. There are now so many more festivals, so much bigger, Australia can draw bands from all over the world and the crowd is absolutely aware of every artist and their work.

General entry to a single performance by a major artist can cost $150+, the average price of a ticket to a major gig has shot up dramatically. More gigs are being played, more are selling out, and the prices are hugely increased over what they used to be.

Smaller gig attendance is up, and the whole live music scene in Australia has been bouyant for years,

Artists can't take all the benefits of the information age and expect no downside. The music industry and artists as a whole are way better off in a post-file sharing world.

Totally agree.

But i wouldn't feel the slightest trace of guilt if the band is enjoying any sort of commercial success.

my ears bled.

as for feeling guilty; you'll find most indie bands wouldn't have a fan base anywhere near what they've achieved thanks to the internet.

anyway; anything thats worth it's salt i'll buy on cd or vinyl. =)
