if it didn't matter we woudn't have different uni's competing against each other..

remember uni's are business they are all competing against each other, so getting in the best one make you stand out xD

Well if you have a Chemistry/Chemical Engineering degree from the International Islamic University, Islamabad, specialising in Ammonium Nitrate use I'm sure it would matter.

With Law and Medicine I do feel it comes down to what Uni you attened and attained your degree. USYD and UNSW being the more prestigious ones. With other degrees such as Teaching, Social Sciences etc it doesn't really matter. Not that you can't get a Law degree from UWS and work for a prestigious law firm but it'll probably take you several years of experience to get there.
disagree on the medicine part. medicine is a degree in high demand atm. all unis are fully accredited and u will get an internship place no matter where u attended uni. the government guarantees this for all local students. how good of a doctor u are depends on how motivated/skilled u are not on what school u went to.

agreed on the medicine part. not on the law part. a student with a law degree from USyd/UNSW will be looked upon more favourably than a student with a law degree from say Macquarie Uni (dunno if they even offer law), but u get the point. there are a many students who graduate from law each year and the firms/companies have a choice as to who they want. obviously they would want the students who went to better established unis?
im pretty sure he said with law and medicine it comes down to what uni you attend.

atm, but in 5 years time... :uhoh:

probably worry more about your marks, rather than the uni.

if you were an employer and had 2 students applying for 1 job and one came from unsw and the other came from uws and they both had exactly the same qualifications and were twin brothers and talked exactly the same what would you do

i ask you this question to answer your own question

i am not trying to be a prick or ambiguous by answering a question with a question just simply trying out a new format of answering serious questions on this forum

Not really. Going to USyd would improve your chances slightly, but even the sandstones are becoming little more than diploma mils. Nothing to agonise about.

For certain, competitive career fields, it does matter where your degree comes from, e.g. law or business. But for most technical fields, such as medicine and engineering, uni does not matter at all.

It can only help to go to the best university you can get into. Won't make a huge difference, but better U.Syd than UWS.

Well, as a graduate from the Arts Faculty of the University of Sydney employers will expect 'all sorts of things'.
Even masking the ambiguity between child exploitation and pleasure as Geoffrey Leonard has exemplified.

argumentum ad geoff:

"Geoffrey Leonard never attended UWS, therefore UWS is a better uni, and USyd may turn you into a child molester"

If you want to do anything post graduate - Yes
If you want a high tier job (investment banking etc.)- Yes

Really depends on the course, in Western Australia for example no engineering firms would hire people from ECU or tafe. They might prefer Murdoch/Curtin since they are more practical but UWA has the prestige.

are businesses biased towards certain uni's, eg does a USYD degree carry more weight than a UWS degree ?

thanks
Nope! what important is, you need to have the degree with good grades but most of all you need to get the guts... Just a tip, when you graduate it doesn't mean you know everything bout your degree, but you need to impress your interviewer and sell yourself (i mean it in a nice way), you need to make them want you among others because you're eager and you'd become an asset if they hire you and it's got nothing to do with your alma mater...
