If people are in relationships during the HSC year does it become a distraction or motivation? Please Discuss.

An argument could go either way, one could argue that it motivates (e.g. You push each other to study), or one could argue that it can distract one's mind.

Depends on the type of personalities, personal motivation and ability to focus, and the stability of the relationship. If it is a fairly calm, stable relationship where the two people are similarly motivated to do well and have similar thoughts on the amount of time the couple should be spending together, it can be good. However if the two have very different attitudes towards school, eg one does almost no work and wants to spend all the time wasting time with the other person, it may drag the hard worker down, or if the couple is very on and off and constantly having huge fights it would be distracting for both. I think it mainly comes down to compatability in terms of lifestyle and aims for the future.

I would argue that it's the complete opposite.

I've been with my girlfriend year 9.

It's good in that you can always have someone to bitch to about HSC work and that they'll listen regardless.

It was also a good time to relax..socialise...

Basically I believe there are no down sides. It provides quite a nice balance in one's life.

Either that, or you can engage in a monogamous relationship with your right hand nightly to relieve stress.

I guess you're right but imagine breaking up (not jinxing you) in your HSC year and end up in depression?

Correct. If the relationship screws up, you will be in a emotional mess.

To me, it's a much needed de-stress. And knowing someone is always there.

I am going through my half yearly exams atm, and my girlfriend has been sick, so that is somewhat of a distraction, although I still have been doing quite well in my exams. I believe that having a relationship during exams has the potential to distract you if you can't stay focussed, but your girl/boyfriend might also know a thing or two about the topic you are studying and may be able to help you. So if you look at it with the right (in my perspective) point of view, then there are more positives to having a relationship while you are in exams, but as for the question of the HSC, I have no personal experience, but I'm sure that it would follow the same idea.

I said this yesterday in Non-School, but I dont think the HSC is a great excuse for not pursuing a relationship. In life, you are always going to have to balance a relationship with other stuff like uni and work - eventually, you are going to have to learn how to create that balance.

In response to the actual question of the thread, it can either be a distraction or motivating depending on the circumstances. But that can be applied to almost anything else - like friends, hobbies etc. You just have to know where to draw the line when things start getting out of balance - which is a necessary life skill in my view.

That's my opinion.

If you guys can't manage a relationship in the hsc, how are you manage when you're working and supporting yourself financially?
