Hello all. Yes I am another nervous little year 10 kid trying to make the right decision for course selections next year. I'd appreciate any form of advice & warnings. I want to study either medcine or health after I finish school. If that doesn't work out then another option is accounting.
I have a few queries:

What's the gap between the Adv & Stndrd English courses. If I ace Standard English, will that still get me the marks for an exceptional ATAR?

I'm currently top 5 for math in my grade. I usually get 80-90% in my tests. But I'm afraid I might be a little shaky in 3 unit maths. Although my teacher says I have the potential to be in the 3 unit class. How much harder is 3 unit from 2 unit & what benefits do I get from picking 3 unit?

Thank You.

& yes I know I mispelt "one" wrong in the title. (want). I do that alot.

3u makes 2u easier..or perhaps it's because 3u students are just better at maths over their 2u colleagues :)

yeah cos the average for the 2u exam undetaken by 3u students was like 65/68
whereas those that do 2u only averaged 30/68..two of thlose clases had an average fail mark so i suppose that's why it's so low

In regard to English... it's better to choose Advanced since you will get a more sophistaced, well-rounded and basically better education compared to those of Standard English. The two papers are marked against each other and percentage wise, it's easier to go well in Advanced (although they are aligned/scaled the same).

I recommend Advanced English.

Oh, and take 3U maths... it's really cool!... kinda hard and you'll be scared when you start straight away, but with a bit of practice and constant revision... you'll improve.

As Aquawhite said, i recommend advanced english. The difference between adv and std is that advanced kids "analyse" (identify, effect, reason) instead of describing (identify and well attempt to state a reason and then link it to the concept) and that adv do a shakespeare text. Shakespeare isn't bad and there are plenty of guides etc around.

If you're getting 15/20 or higher right now definitely do adv english. If you're getting 12-14/20 and are willing to work harder then do adv english. If not, do standard. Oh and as a general rule of thumb, it's better to have an average rank in adv than to be 1st in standard IN YOUR SCHOOL. This is because only ~3 people in the state who do std get a band 6.... it might be "easier" but it's much harder to get a high mark in standard than in advanced.

You should definitely do 3U maths. 3U isn't that much harder then 2U so at the very least try it out. Even if you drop out, what you learn in 3U will help you in 2U anyway :)

um no...

1st in standard gets like 96 in english which basically pwns more than 99% of advanced students.

No, actually it doesn't.

Both English (Advanced) and (Standard) are scaled the same way, hence the same scaling. The scaling of both course is based on Paper 1 + Paper 2 relationship which ensures that both courses' candidates are treated fairly in terms of scaling.

um no...

1st in standard english doesnt necessarily mean you are better than an average advance student. what you have said is correct, 96 overall in standard is better than a 96 in advance, but you will have to remember that only a handful amount of people in standard do get a band 6, but these band 6's are very low. that 96 was the highest i have see for a standard student. the reason for them not getting a lot of band 6's for standard is that they have to compete against advance students, as in they are marked alongside with the advance, extension english students. being an advance or an extension student the vocabulary and overall sentence structure is waaayyy greater than a standard student, and thus the HSC markers tend to mark the standard papers a little more harsher.

so overall, do advance english.
as for maths, just do extension, if you dont like it or you find it hard, you can always drop down to 2 unit. but if you have extension maths, it will do wonders to your ATAR.

Look whom I quoted. I quoted Aquawhite who was talking about mark (who quoted anna) and my response was exactly related to that. So my response about "pwning" still holds because 96 in English std pwns 99% of English Advanced people. in terms of marks If you have any doubt in mind, plz refer to 2008 scaing report.

what you have said is correct, 96 overall in standard is better than a 96 in advance,
correct or incorrect? Make up your mind.

Um...how do you know if they get marked reltively more harshly? And how is this relevant to what I said? I never told the guy to do English (Std). Get it right man.

only the contents that are taught.

Adv materials are more "sophisticated" and "difficult" than std materials.

Yeah, well the scaling is supposedly better only if you do well in the subject, and if you think you want to learn a more sophisticated level of english then go for it ^^

Do adv - the standard and adv course do not differ much (you have to study the same amount of texts and the same kinds of text types. the only thing thats different is the content of the text themselves)

and do 3U maths for prelim at least. if you really cant hack it or you just dont like it, drop it in year 12. everything in the HSC course will feel easier in 2U if you completed one year of 3U maths. < trust me on this count b/c that is what i did and the 2U course isnt as painful as the 3U course. (it isnt by its nature but because i've survived one whole year of 3U [Oh the pain] 2U feels even less painful by comparison)

OR! if you really want to milk the 3U course for all its got, do 3U in year 12 as well but once you've covered all the 2U topics drop it and by the time trials/HSC come around, studying for 2U isnt that hard. in fact, you'd probs know everything in the 2U course already =D!

imo english relies eavily on class discussion to help you understand the concepts well, and as your school offers standard english im assuming its not selective and therefore you'll have the lower end studnets in your standard class, who are normally disruptive and slower learning. go in advanced as you are surrounded by somewhat smarter people, who help i guess... but hey thats just me and my school :)

true that, if you look at state rankings, i entirely agree that it "pwns" 90 odd percent of advance students. but i am pretty sure annabackwards was referring to school rankings.

correct or incorrect? Make up your mind.

this made me rofl. i already did. i agree with you."what you have said is correct, 96 overall in standard is better than a 96 in advance", posting it up again if you havent read it properly :). mate i aint trying to disagree with you, yes your statement is true, i am just trying to convince the OP to get into advance, rather than doing standard. peeps like you are trying to do the opposite which might stuff up the OP.

Um...how do you know if they get marked reltively more harshly? And how is this relevant to what I said? I never told the guy to do English (Std). Get it right man.
i was gonna do standard english at the start of year 11, then asked my teacher who was and still is a HSC marker. she said that the first section, was marked all together. a particular teacher does not know what she is marking, whether standard or advance, but the vocabularly and the sentence structure will make it quite obvious to the teacher whether the student is of a "standard level" or an "advance level". if you dont believe what i am saying, go to this site, ARC :: Standards Packages and compare the essay from standard and advance only for section 1, and i am hundred percent sure that you will be able to tell the difference. the evidence for why they get relatively harsher, is right in front of you. why do less than 1% of the people who do standard getting band 6? because it is marked harsher. ROFL, and what do you mean by "not telling the guy to do standard english", you are in full farking support for the OP to do standard from your comments.

and now its my turn.
get it right faggot. ;)

btw namu, i still love you man, since you help me out with questions i post up on BOS on ext 2. so yeh thanks and no hard feelings. :)
