Yes, this is how you do it. You can hit the reply button at the bottom of the thread, to post a message in the same thread, like I am now.

how do i know if someone has replied to my thread? just keep checking?

Mostly. There is also a 'subscribe to thread' option if you click on 'thread tools' at the top of the thread.
