Is there any penalty for doing a HSC maths exam in pencil?

In HSC, if it's visible, it has to be marked HOWEVER it really pisses examiners off. If you're in a situation where they're not sure if you should be awarded a mark or not, you will tend to not get the mark.

If it says to use pen, then theoretically they can give you zero for the exam, for not following the instructions.

Depends. iirc for Sciences you have to do those in pencil

In maths, I'd stick to pen when drawing graphs

Yep. How about for multiple choice? If you go back and change, you just cross out?

Yeah I think you also have to do those in pen, iirc. But read the instructions.

Your paper gets split and gets scanned. THis is the copy that the examiners will mark. If you do it in pencil, there is a strong chance that it will be almost impossible to read on the scanned page and therefore you may potentially get 0 marks

if you were to use pencil, maybe 2B or B would be okay? Those are fairly dark, but HB is quite hard to read

but BOS prefers black pen best though, as it is easiest to read and doesn't smudge (can happen with pencils).

I second this

Yeah early this year , i was in my year 11 3 unit maths class my teacher told me off for using pencil in my topic test
In the trials for maths, students got told off by examiners and they said no using pencil, have to use pen.

I still don't get why we are having this discussion. It takes the same amount of effort to bring a pencil or a pen into the exam. Just use a black pen that doesn't smudge.
