lol i meant x^2 -1 inside the brackets so...

inv tan (x^2-1)^1/2
I assume you mean tan-1[(x2 - 1)0.5]?
Note that the natural domain of tan-1x is all real x, hence the only restriction lies in the square root:
x2 - 1 ≥ 0
=> x ≥ 1 or x ≤ - 1

ah i see lol. Was thinking all real x but then roots are bigger than 0 :\. ty.

They don't use that notation at HSC level I believe (although you can find Coroneos alternating between it and the latter notation in his earlier books).
