I was wondering which is easier to get in: Medicine or Dentistry?

I understand that most Universities only offer Dentistry as a graduate degree but some like Melbourne do offer undergraduate.

What's the average UAI of successful Dentistry applicants?

I know some Unis have a 90 UAI requirement but thats just the minimum. Is a 99+ UAI generally required? Along with a good UMAT and STAT (is STAT required?) of course.

I would assume that dentistry is alot easier than med, although i don't know what the average uai since its only ur GPA , GAMSAT and interview that is accounted for most post grad dent entry.

CSU has just opened up dentistry for undergraduates for 08, u need at least a decent UAI, UMAT(not sure whether they use this), and an interview.

my friend and i both got the same umat score and an op1 (ie. a uai of 99+) this year and he made it into uq med, but i didnt make it into uq dentistry. *sigh*

generally med has been harder. with UQ provisional MBBS this year it might be different as I heard people with UMAT in the low 170s got in. however they could be BMPs i guess?

In actuality, Dentistry at Melbourne University is harder to get in than Medicine. Just because there are less positions available.
About 60-70 students are accepted into Dentistry and about 200 into Medicine.

I have 4 friends studying at Melbourne Dentistry, two was offered FULL FEE Dentistry at 99.65-99.75 ENTER and a very very decent UMAT (270/300 before Melbourne University's weird scaling takes place).

Medicine tends to be around that ENTER as well for Melbourne University, however, 99.65 should be able to get you a CSP place with a 270 umat.

Moving along now. Prior to 2008 Dentistry was harder to get in. However, with the introduction of La Trobe's Dentistry course, the enter dropped dramatically with a first round offer of only 98.85 with no umat required. Much of this reduction was attributed by many factors such as the location of the university in a rural area, the lack of publicity and knowledge about the existence of the course etc.

Then again, one could argue that many students with 95-97 UAI landed a place with UTAS or JCU Med.

Does it really matter which uni you go for dentistry if you try to practise as a private practitioner?

BTW, this is not for myself, I am not interested in neither med nor dentistry, just for my bro...

You need about 90, at this stage to get into CSU Dentistry.

Also, rural students get preference over everybody else. So you need a UAI of at least 90, and you need to do well in the interview. No UMAT, a far as I'm aware.

The UAI will no doubt increase this year as it gains popularity (being only 1 of 2 undergrad dentistry degrees in NSW), but rural students will always get preference over Metro and international student applications.

As to the university, no.
If you are to open your own clinic, it would matter very little. Dentist are in dire need. Regardless of the origin of graduation, you will be overbooked

I do highly recommend La Trobe University.
There is one major difference with La Trobe to other universities is that it offers a MASTERS program with NO extra years.

5 Years at CSU or Melbourne University will graduate you with a Bachelor of dental science (as a dentist).

5 Years at La Trobe will grade you with a Bachelor of health sciences in Dentistry & Masters of Dentistry.

That's right, a free Masters degree.
This masters will be more recognised internationally than the bachelors.

Nobody really cares about a Masters degree when you've done Denistry though, to be honest. I was a dental nurse for a while, and they'll just about take anything in the industry... If you're going to do denistry, it'd be more worth doing a Ph D or Doctorate as postgraduate studies, rather than a "free" masters.

Regardless, the entry requirements for CSU as of 08 were;
90 UAI
Interview
Preference given to rural and remote students
40 places

I'm not sure if this is still the case, but at one stage they were only going to take the top 20 students in the Dentistry degree after third year, the remaining students graduated at the end of 3 years with a degree in oral therapy. I'm not sure if this is still the case.

I'm sure it will go up as demand grows the UAI requirement will grow, but I doubt it'll ever reach 99. CSU is trying to keep the degree attainable for rural students. Not many rural students get 99.

The minimum requirements are cut offs to be considered. 90 is no clear indication just as Melbourne's "minimum" 97 medicine, 95% of offers are still high 99.6+.

As for the Masters, please look outside the box.
The application for specialist training or Ph. Ds are very competitive. The fact that you have a masters will give you an edge.

I specifically mentioned international because they WILL value a masters degree over a bachelors.

I'm not doing Denistry. It didn't exist when I started uni, which coincidentally was at about the same time you were being toilet trained. I was describing the entry requirements for Denistry at CSU in 2008. Don't argue with me - the minimum UAI cutoff for Denistry at CSU in 2008 was 90.
